I ended up with a half dozen of the T23s with the non wireless lids. Googling around proved that at this point the wired lids were scarce and more expensive than T23s. I wanted to drop a gig of memory in each and make them wireless.
I got some cheap [ebay] antannas from China marked "Hitachi Cable, LTD HT008" and some "Intel PRO/Wireless 2200BG Network" also marked "ANATEL" cards. See picture.
I followed [not exactly, but close (don't need to remove fan)- I've done this a few times before] the IBM HMM:
ftp://ftp.software.ibm.com/pc/pccbbs/mo ... 2p9631.pdf
Nothing too difficult here, if you've opened a box before. The cable is traced just as in the correct lid, the antenne are in the corners, leave about five inches of cable comming out of the monitor. The right antenna is a little towards the hinge because the lid has a raised area in the corner probably for lcd support. There IS enough room between the LCD and the lid for the cable and antanne.
Performance - Well better range and more consistant than the Linksys Wireless-G it replaced.
pros: completely transparent
cons: no modem
I know about the titanium lid construction, the little windows in the correct lid, etc...But I think this may work better that the correct lid. I don't have one to compare.
Sure works a heck of a lot better than an origional airport card in an Apple titanium G4.

Nice you got that working.
Because of the titanium in the lid, I've never actually tried converting a standard lid, but put the antennae under the palmrest.
What is the length of those antenna cables that you used?

Length of antennas:
overall: 28 & 1/2" - really the antennas are fused and are one unit.
The black one: 24 & 1/2" - shorter at both ends.
I left 5 & 1/2" and 6 &1/2" respectively comming out of the monitor.

Looks like a shorter lead version of the third one in my T23 comparison from a little over a year ago:
