T30 built-in mic squeels

#1 Post by kitmcdowall » Wed Jan 28, 2009 11:26 pm

The built-in mic on my T30 squeels if I brush my hand across the mic opening. This just started recently. I think it happened after I installed the AC3Filter for audio to get codecs for Windows Media Player. I can not find any way to shut this squeel off, or shut off the mic.

Does anyone know how to do this? I tried moving the mic volume slider to the bottom but that did not help.

If I mute the hardware speaker (via the volume icon on the task bar), then I do not get any squeel. After I installed the AC3Filter, I did raise the software volume Master slider, so I suppose that is why it squeels now and not before. I had to raise that master volume slider so that I could hear movies being played with Windows Media Player.

But I would like to just shut off the built-in mic and not mute the whole speaker setup.

Thanks in advance.

In Control Panel, Sounds and Audio Devices, you can TICK the Mute box for your Inputs such as Line In and Mic.
Check settings under Volume tab, Advanced and under Audio & Voice tabs.
If you still have problems, take the keyboard and keyboard bezel off, and disconnect the thin black rubber microphone cable at the bottom-right corner of the motherboard.

Thanks a bunch. Muting the mic fixed the problem (squeels from the built-in mic).

I had tried muting it before and it still squeeled, but in hind sight, I think I probably just clicked the mute box and then tested by brushing the mic, but had not exited the "mute" screen, so it had not taken effect yet.

I do not have any use for the mic, either built-in or the port to plug into. The only mic I use is for Skype to webcam with grandkids, and the Logitech webcam camera has it's own builtin mic (USB connected), which works fine even if the Mic is muted.

No more squeels. Hooray.

Again, thanks.

@RealBlackStuff - its not a good idea to fully disconnect the connector for the mic - because it has not only the two wires for that - but also the switch and led for the ultrabay
an with that removed i'm not sure if the ultrabay still detects the lever pushed fully in - an thus not working...
