Fan Error - Press F1
Hi,
Where can I find a video showing the removal and replacement of the fan? I have the pdf manual and a video showing the keyboard removal (done this once before) but I'd like to see a video for the Hinge Cover and Keyboard Bezel.
My fan has been very noisy for more than a year now. One day, upon boot, I got the Fan Error message and pressed F1. Entered the BIOS, exited, and it booted up. Several boots later the message appeared again but I think all I did was press ESC and it booted. I ran PC DOC and the Fan test passes.
Strangely enough, it's now quieter, runs less often, and the T23 seems cooler, or maybe it's my mind playing tricks on me.
None the less, it appears the fan needs replacing so I've ordered one for $10+ $10 shipping. And I'll try to talk the local computer shop into giving me a rice grain worth of heat paste. I've never gone so deep into the laptop before but am taking the dive.
I have not had the pulsing fan issue or the thick white horizontal line at top upon boot that I've been reading about. But, after taking it apart to the fan access, is it easy enough to inspect the two solder points on the mobo or do I need to get in deeper? The only pics I've seen for it show the mobo already removed and on a table which does help too.
Thanks.

The HMM should give you all the info required.
You need to take the battery, keyboard, hinge cover and keyboard bezel (aka palm rest) off, then you can take the fan out (3 screws only and its powercable).

Thanks for the "aka palm rest", now I know what they're talking about there. That HMM is very detailed in it's steps and diagrams but being inexperienced with gutting laptops I do have a little fear.
What about the System Board (mobo)? In order to inspect or repair the two solder points, do I need to also remove the DIMM, Mini PCI Adapter, Ethernet Daughter Card, and the CPU, PC Card Slot assembly, Speaker, HD Bay, and Ultrabay 2000 Slot like it says for the System Board? I guess so, right? If so, maybe I'll leave well enough alone there.
Also, I've tried using tpfancontrol_0_20 but I get problems with even the latest winio so I figured I probably don't need to go there and risk more problems anyway... not in a testing mood right now.

Don't know what you mean by 'two solder points', but if they are the inductors on the mobo, they are on the bottom of the mobo. For getting at them, you will also have to remove the CD cage and the speaker unit.
In other words, you will have to take practically the whole T23 apart to get the mobo out.
Take a sheet of paper, and write down from where you take out what screws, then use scotchtape and glue the screws next to the corresponding text. To re-assemble, work your way backwards.
Also, check your PM.

Yes, sorry, it is the inductors. Since it's not been an issue just yet I think I'll just forget about it for now. If I successfully replace the fan it will give me confidence to get in deeper if there's a need at a later date like for the inductors.
Thanks for the excellent support.
