T30 hard drive upgrade - not recognized

#1 Post by bosco » Fri Feb 06, 2009 10:32 pm

I'm trying to upgrade a 20gb hard drive in a T30 to a 40gb Western Digital WD400UE. I used Acronis Easy Migrate and it cloned the 20gb to the 40gb ok. However, when I put the 40gb drive in and reboot the drive is not recognized.

The bios was 2.03b and embedded controller was 1.03. I updated both to 2.10 and 1.07, but still, the drive is not being recognized.

The drive is a good drive. I put it in a USB enclosure and connect it and all the data is there.

Does the T30 have any hard drive restrictions like the T43? Could it be a corrupt MBR? Any ideas?

Never mind. I just found this post via Google.

Looks like I need to use True Image instead of Easy Migrate and change the partitions manually.

Did you put the caddy on the HD before you put it in the T30?
If not, the pins will not slot in properly.

Misalligned/bent pins on a new HD are not much fun to straighten.

I accidentally bent the pins on my new HD, because I tried to force the harddrive caddy into my machine. The HDD should slide in and out fairly easily.

I did put the caddy on before putting the hard drive in. The problem was the hard drive cover. There's a little bit of play between the cover and the hard drive, so I don't think the hard drive was being pushed in all the way.

I took the cover off and pushed the drive in all the way and it worked. I then pushed the cover on, had to force it a little, and all seems good now.

place a small rubber piece (the kind that the laptop's feet are made of) between the cover and the hdd - i've done so on my former T30 - and it worked perfectly
ex: T30, TR451, TR453, R51, R52, X40, X60, R61, T400
X200 - P8600 2.66Ghz, 3G, 250G
G50-70 - 3558U 2.4Ghz, 4G, 1T
