Netflix experience

#1 Post by Islandguy » Sun Feb 08, 2009 8:31 pm

My Netflix experience is less than satisfactory with my T23...the streaming video is very jerky. Now my t30 works fine...could it be a limitation in the video card of the T23? Any thoughts would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Jim

Since your sig says you're running 384 MB of RAM on your T23, you would likely benefit by adding memory.

What type of connection do you have to the internet and what else is the T23 running? I am currently streaming 30 Rock on Netflix to my X22 (800Mhz/640MB) via a 1.2MB DSL line and across an 802.11b wireless connection, using full-screen mode, without dropping any visible frames or stuttering. The video quality could probably be a little bit better; I'd say it's around VHS SP mode. As long as I have exclusive use of the download pipe (i.e., the daughter is not using SoulSeek) then it's quite watchable. The X22 is running XP SP2 and only has about 40 processes executing. IE7 is of course using 95% of the CPU resources. The other major programs are AVG 7.5 and Firefox 3 (idling, but taking up 111MB of memory). I don't have a T23 that's been updated with WMP11 around at the moment but I'd be surprised if it's worse than the X22.

edit: Found a wireless T23 (2647-4NU; 1GB memory) which has all of the software (XP SP3, IE7, WMP11, Netflix movie player) installed. Streamed the same show as was running on the X22 and it looks a little bit worse (about VHS LP; probably due to the larger screen). The T23 has AVG 8 running and I also had Firefox 3 idling in the background (4 open tabs; 65MB of memory). After seeing the difference, I much prefer the slightly clearer video of the X22 over the T23. But either system plays back smoothly with my net connection. Oh, and I also just ran a speed test via dslreports.com and it said my download bandwidth is 935Kbps. Maybe it's time again to call AT&T and have them look at my phone line in the junction box across the street.

My connection is fine...the T30 works great, ethernet or wireless. Both of my T23's are herky, jerky...I turned off my virus/firewall sw and still have the same result...only thing I can think of is adding more ram...

Neglected to think about the display's color depth when reporting on my T23 status... The system was set up with 32 bit color; the highest it can support and possibly the slowest to render. You might think about checking your video driver. The one I'm running on that T23 is:

S3 Graphics SuperSavage/IXC IBM
Date: 9/23/2001
Version: 6.13.10.1224
DirectX: 8
DirectX Media: 6.05.2600.5512

This was from a recent clean install off of the factory restore disks. I'm also using the latest Netflix Movie Viewer (Version 1.2.211)
