The laptop was left on all night (rarely happens) so first thing this morning I shut it down. A few minutes later I remembered something I needed to do and went to turn it back on, but got nothing after BIOS except a blinking white cursor on a black screen. Tried again several times with the same result.
Later in the day, after putting in a smaller spare drive and installing Windows onto it, I tried the failed WD in the UltraBay adapter. To my surprise, I was able to view everything on the drive! It was responding perfectly, and I quickly made a copy to my external drive. So I popped the spare out and put the WD in the main slot, booted up, and again got the blinking white cursor..
Sorry for the long post, but how could this drive not boot from the normal slot but show up and work perfectly in the adapter slot???
