hard drive crapped out but works fine in ultrabay caddy???

#1 Post by flyonthewall » Fri Feb 13, 2009 2:34 am

So just two months ago I purchased a NEW WD Scorpio 250GB drive. Manufacture date stated October 2008. Put it in, loaded up all my programs and media and it's been fine, up until this morning..

The laptop was left on all night (rarely happens) so first thing this morning I shut it down. A few minutes later I remembered something I needed to do and went to turn it back on, but got nothing after BIOS except a blinking white cursor on a black screen. Tried again several times with the same result.

Later in the day, after putting in a smaller spare drive and installing Windows onto it, I tried the failed WD in the UltraBay adapter. To my surprise, I was able to view everything on the drive! It was responding perfectly, and I quickly made a copy to my external drive. So I popped the spare out and put the WD in the main slot, booted up, and again got the blinking white cursor.. :( Tried to boot a couple more times with the same results, so I put it back in the UltraBay and (what the hell!?) everything's right there like there's nothing wrong!

Sorry for the long post, but how could this drive not boot from the normal slot but show up and work perfectly in the adapter slot???

Its possible that the 250 has lost part of or corrupted the MBR
In the 2nd position, it does not use the MBR, the primary HDD does the work
The 2nd (250) just acts as storage
Many more here no more than I

I also have a Western Digital HDD, I bought it a few months ago.

And it seems that I have the same problem that flyonthewall has. Blinking cursor with no boot.

Flyonthewall, did you ever manage to fix your problem, and if so, what's the solution?

Thanks.

Never took time to mess with it, I have just continued to use it as a secondary drive.. :/
