T30 LCD issues
T30 LCD issues
I'm looking for an opinion, or maybe more of a conformation. I bought a t30 with a troubled motherboard. I replaced the motherboard and got it working perfectly on an external monitor. I popped open the screen to find it had no inverter and had been taken apart and not fully reassembled. I put my ancient, and unused in the last two years, inverter in and turned it on. I now get display, but all I'm getting is a distorted white screen. There is no attempt at the IBM logo, and no variations with any movements or time. Everything has been re-seated. Am I correct in assuming it's a dead LCD, not an ancient inverter issue?
THANKS!

Re: T30 LCD issues
The story here just confirms that baying a defect machine does not always mean that one will be getting a machine with one and only one "natural" error.
It may be that what is being bought is just what's left over from someone else's "parts swapping" repair(s).
With a faulty motherboard and no inverter I would certainly be alerted and very suspicious about just anything.
With the screen being white, this is not an inverter issue.
Given the circumstances I would be starting by checking the FRU numbers of the LCD panel and the LCD cable.
It could be that the parts present do not belong together.
The second thing I would do would be to check fuses on the motherboard.
I know that the board has been replaced, but it might well be that both boards has a blown fuse by now.
It will only be necessary to check the fuses located close to the LCD connector (on both sides of the board).
My third thing to do would be to inspect the LCD cable for any damage, and if possible try another cable.
Of course, with another working machine available I would attach the problem very differently.
I recently repaired a t21 with a white screen. It turned out to be that the previous owner had tried to open the LCD assembly without disconnecting it from the bottom part of the machine and by doing so had been putting too much pressure on the cable. The connector on the cable had come loose.
I managed to blow the F4 fuse on tree different t2x boards before I got it figured out.
I know for sure that a blown fuse and everything else being good can cause a white screen.
I cannot say that this will always happen because panels from different manufactures may behave differently.

Re: T30 LCD issues
It could also be a bad or poorly connected LCD cable (check the back of the LCD).
You mention a dead T30 in your sig, does that still have a good LCD?
T30 inverters are the same for XGA/SXGA+ (but one for 150nit and one for 200nit LCDs), but require different LCD-cables.
There are also fuses to check around the LCD connector.

Re: T30 LCD issues
I tried with the cable from the dead t30, but the LCD is smashed from it. I have not had a chance to check the fuses yet, but I will do so tonight. The motherboard came from a different seller, and I doubt it is a fuse problem. I'm looking into buying a new LCD, or at least finding a test panel.

Re: T30 LCD issues
Fuses are all fine. I've put up a post looking for a new screen.
