USB 2.0 PCMCIA cards, on an X24, anyone tried this?

#1 Post by n1hilist » Sun May 17, 2009 2:36 am

Dudes and dudettes.

So I've been fixing up this old TP x24 that I was given, almost perfect now, and a great travel 'netbook', if you will.

Now this fellow only has USB 1.0, I'm keen to buy one of those PCMCIA USB2.0 cards, for those time when I need to use an external HDD.

Has anyone tried this sort of thing? I don't expect full USB2.0, I doubt the P3 1.3ghz CPU could handle it, but anything is better than USB 1.0 :)

Worth bothering with?

Just wanted to point out some things about those cards. I have one myself (in my X30). They work great for flash drives but for external HDDs they don't provide enough power. You will need to use one of the onboard USB ports for power-- on my X30, the USB 1.1 ports are too far away from the PCMCIA slot. Thats why I'm stuck with flash drives on the X30. Also, the ports on the card are very tight and the card tends to come out when I pull on the flash drive. I opened up the laptop and put a piece of tape over the card and PCMCIA cage. That works well.
