Re: VISTA on T23
Most likely the reason is that a T23 is just not strong enough to run Vista (I had one). Vista needs a small supercomputer to run on (I have one in my T61p) and would be dog slow on a T23. ... JDH
Re: VISTA on T23
I have WinXP Pro loaded on my T21, but never even considered loading Vista, for that very reason. XP is a little slow even though I've upgraded the hardware as much as I can. I could only imagine what Vista would be like.

found a number of vista drivers for the t23 (8nu); or perhaps
you could use the ones for xp, as works with 7.

Re: VISTA on T23
What you won't, and probably never will, find are video and modem drivers. Maybe some other things as well. There is just no reason to write Vista or 7 drivers for hardware that old. You would be better off installing XP, and using a Vista skin of some sort. You can make XP look a lot like Vista if that is what you are going for.

Re: VISTA on T23
Windows 7 (RTM) is running OK on a T23 (1,13 Ghz/ 512 MB).
There is no need to install additional drivers (video, trackpoint, etc.)
Most drivers are installed automatically, others are found via Windows update.
Looks like the same performance as XP.

Re: VISTA on T23
Hi Miata, welcome to the forum. You are probably just using the Windows standard video driver, which works fine for some things, but has no hardware acceleration. It's kind of like the Unix VESA driver. Not hardware specific.
P.S. - I just threw 7 RTM on my T23 to see what would happen. Sure enough it was just as expected. There is no driver for the S3 graphics ("Standard VGA Graphics Adapter" was loaded). No driver for the modem or audio controller. And two other "unknown devices", which turn out to be the Intel LPC interface controller and ACPI Embedded Controller. So, yeah, it will work, but not very well IMHO.

Kind of like running Premium Petrol in a Pinto
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ford_Pinto
Can you do it?
Sure
Why on Earth would you want to?
Throw ubuntu or one of the simpler Linux's on it, watch it scream! My T30 boots almost twice as fast as the XP's do

@ Neil. thx for your welcome !
It was about time. I have read this forum already for a long time and got very usefull info for my thinkpad family.
Running W7 was basically just an experiment and to be honest, I didn't really check the hardware listing.
Video and sound are OK with the W7-drivers and the speed is about the same as XP
On the other hand, like Ron also stated, why run W7 (or Vista) on a T23 which runs perfectly on XP or Linux.
Reason is I'm always looking for new challenges like many forum-members I guess
Some are really usefull and others are not.
Regards, Hans (Another hobby is my 1990 Mazda Miata !)

The Mazda Miata is called MX5 in the USA and several other countries, and Eunos in Japan.

Back on topic:
Just checked my T23 with W7.
During clean install all necessary drivers where installed except for the trackpoint.
Windows update recognized this device and showed the necessary driver as optional.
Although perhaps not the best drivers, there where no marks in device-manager.
@Ron:
Have been many times to RTP when it was still IBM.
Worked many years for the IBM EMEA service-organization in the Netherlands.

Several hundred times, I work at RDU International Airport, its only a mile or so over to the IBM campus, I actually cut though part of RTP twice a day coming and going to work.

why wouldn't Vista run well on T23??? slam into that baby SSD, max out memory and use the vlite. oh and cut down on the processes to let your processor breath.

I've had W7 RC1 on a T23 at one point, for sheer testing purposes, and it was sad...at least in my book.
FWIW, I wasn't happy with Vista on T42p or T43p either...it took T61p (and W500 later on) to get me to understand what it was good for...

For the very same reason people usually don't install XP on 701C butterflies...the machine lacks the horsepower to run it properly.why wouldn't Vista run well on T23

Skip Vista and go to W7, or stick with XP-Pro until 2014.

What is vista good for?
Tough question really. We got clear type on XP (good stuff) and good 64-bit memory and speed with Vista 64-bit (more good stuff) and maybe even IPv6 when it finally comes. But that's about all. Really, short of these things, Windows 2000 works perfectly well.
As to skipping Vista and waiting for Windows 7? That is waiting for godot. Windows 7 is Vista SP3 by any measure I have read.

well there is one more thing, it seems that application acess time is faster in Vista than XP. of course in the case of T23 it might be reversed.jdhurst wrote:What is vista good for?
