T23 hangs on Internet.

#1 Post by Bruce Guttman » Sat Oct 03, 2009 6:40 pm

I have a Thinkpad T23, 1.13GHz PIII, 768 MB, 30 GB IBM Hard Drive. Running Windows XP Pro SP 2. D-Link Air-Plus G PC Card wireless connection. Firefox or Safari are doing this:

After about 10 minutes of browsing, the computer hangs. No Ctrl-Alt-Del, no response from Trackpoint device. Only way out is a hard shutdown (via power button).

It didn't do this until recently. I've been using this combination for about 2 years to surf the Forum. It survived my changeover from one wireless connection to another.

I have 3 other computers sharing this DSL connection and they are fine.

I removed the wireless card from the T-23 and it (the T23) ran fine for 2 days. The wireless card is working fine in this computer, an older Thinkpad 770Z (also running XP).

I can only surmise that something went south with either my D-link drivers or with Windoze, since it does the same thing on two different browsers. I really don't want to have to rebuild my system, although I do have another hard drive to do it with.

Network experts, where do I start?

How much space is left on that hard disk? 30GB might be getting full!
Empty the browser caches, delete your \Documents and Settings\[userid]\Local Settings\Temp files.

Thanks, RBS. I had done a file purge and defrag about a month ago. Shouldn't have been too bad. I think I had 30% free after the purge and defrag.

But a new development. The laptop now freezes almost immediately, and the fan seems to not be working. Off to find a working fan; Ebay isn't too helpful. Can you recommend some parts people?

You can search ebay for T23 and fan. Just watch out for the ones that say "T20, T21, T22, T23 fan" because the T20-T22 use a totally different fan.

I'll take a look after my daughter takes her nap today, I might have a few spares...

I had this same problem. I'm not at home right now so I don't remember what WIFI card I have installed, but it happened when I upgraded to .NET Framework 3.51 (I think). All was well when I went to a previous restore point on XP. Then again, I got upgrade crazy and mine is running SP3.

Re: T23 hangs on Internet. - SOLVED

An update:

I had bought another T-23 to keep going while solving the problem and in the interim bought a new fan. The fan fixed the problem fine. Thanks for the tip on the temperature program; that seems pretty nifty. Even works on the T23 (as well as the T40, R40, and T42).

I had a bunch of "junker" parts and discovered that there were a few "unsoldered" capacitors (how did they assemble these things? The bottom of the capacitor was corroded copper; should have been solder!) and one that had simply blown apart. By judiciously swapping capacitors (after tinning the bottoms) I was able to get two more working T23s. Anybody need a nice Thinkpad for cheap?
