T30 100% CPU Usage Shutdown
T30 100% CPU Usage Shutdown
14December2009
Greetings.
My T30 has from time to time shutdown
when XP CPU usage has gone to 100+% for too long ...
Neither of my other two XP laptops have ever done that.
I would like to ask/know what T30 setting is triggering this shutdown?
Previously the T30 would sometimes shutdown
while I was running a DIxml clone operation under a PE boot.
I solved that problem by disabling the BIOS "idle shutdown" setting.
Is there some XP or T30 setting that is triggering this shutdown
that occurs sometimes when XP CPU usage goes to 100+% for too long?
Any helpful replies/insights appreciated.
Thank you.

Re: T30 100% CPU Usage Shutdown
Overheating of the CPU causes that.
Lovely day for a Guinness! (The Real Black Stuff)

Greetings.
Thanks for the reply.
Should there be something like the/a fan
that would/should keep the CPU from overheating?
Do these overheat shutdowns imply some error condition to fix?
Neither of my other two XP laptops have ever done that.
I can run video edit dubs that keep CPU usage @ 100% overnight
with no overheat/shutdown problems but sometimes
screensavers and compiling lots of little ahk scripts at once
can cause the shutdown. I'm not sure why or what the difference is ...
Any helpful replies/insights appreciated.

Greetings.
I seem to have found a solution to the unresponsive fan.
It's nice to hear the fan kick in ...
I haven't heard the fan kick in since I don't know when ...
I don't know for sure yet how this will affect the shutdowns ...
I hope this solution will shutdown the shutdowns ...

Greetings.
So I've learned a little bit about the T30 fan.
I knew nothing about the fan before now.
There is supposed to be a piece of "Thermal Rubber"
between the CPU & the fan. I found that the D.C. based
used ThinkPad vendor reconditioned this fan not by putting
in a proper piece of "Thermal Rubber" but by cutting a little square
from the "Thermal Rubber" on top of the fan.
Scheister.
I found that this "Thermal Rubber" is CRUCIAL.
I might buy a new fan anyway.
I'm not yet sure how to disconnect the power cable.
I don't want to damage something.
Maybe someone has some experience with that to impart?
It seems the CPU with no fan running heats up 1° at time to about 90°C!
It seems that at a minimium the fan either has to always run at a low speed
(until the need for a cooling blast at a higher speed)
or cool the CPU to like 54°C and then shut off and then wait for the CPU
to reach like 64°C & cool the CPU back down to 54°C ... in an endless loop.
Maybe someone has some experience with that to impart?
Any helpful replies/insights appreciated.
Thank you.

Re: T30 100% CPU Usage Shutdown

Greetings.
I found a nice little install-free freeware CPU temp utility.
I used that on my Gateway XP laptop that has never overheated & shutdown.
Doing nothing the Gateway Intel Celeron CPU runs at about 78°C.
When CPU usage is maxed out @ 100%, the CPU heats up to 90°C.
The fan kicks in and cools the CPU down to around 87°C.
I observed that the T30 overheats & shuts down somewhere above 90°C.
I need a proper piece of "Thermal Rubber" & maybe a new fan.
The questions below still remain.
