After soldering ram slot T30 doesn't work

#1 Post by ulix » Tue Dec 29, 2009 3:05 pm

Hello,
so i soldered my ram slot. One slot is working. the second one isn't, have to check it but thats not the problem.
I remember, before i dismissed the T30 there was the problem with lan.
But my laptop doesn't work.
There is the error: this error accured before the soldering. How can I solve it?

Code: Select all

Initializing Intel(R) Boot Agent Version 4.1.07
PXE-E05: The LAN adapter configuration is corrupted or has not been
initialized
Boot Agent cannot continue
and after this message is comming a new one:

Code: Select all

ERROR
Expansion Rom not initialized - PCI on Motherboard
Bus:00, Device:00, Function:00,
Press <F1> to Setup
I though it is the harddrive, but it isn't because i tested another one, which is form another T30 an it also didn't work.
So what can I do?
cheers

Try removing the MiniPCI adapter card. If the "LAN" that the error message refers to is the ethernet controller, then you may have to replace the motherboard as I believe that the ethernet is soldered, not socketed.

The T30 Hardware Maintenance Manual gives you all of the details on where everything is in the system and how to remove it:

http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... MIGR-42308

For the MiniPCI card, it's located behind the large square panel on the bottom of the system, near the center.

Not sure what you mean by "van".

The MiniPCI card is about 1.5" x 2.5" (4.5cm x 5.5cm) and is held in place by two metal arms, very similar to the ones which hold the memory modules in those slots. For the T30, I believe that card is either the wireless/modem combo card or just a wireless version. That only means that there may be three connectors you have to remove (two antenna wires and the modem plug) or just the two antenna wires. There may also be a metal shield that fits over the bottom portion of the card that you will have to remove before taking the card out of the slot.

Oh, I think i have not such card.
are this two antennes named: Main and aux and going up to the lcd pancel?
If yes, then i have no mini pci card.
So the ethernet controller is broken. Can I change it, you said maybe soldered or sticked. Is the ethernet controller also on the board with the other connections, display or usb and so on?
thanks
cheers

Yes, the Main and Aux leads are for the antennas in the lid, next to the LCD panel.

My understanding is that the ethernet controller chip in the T30 is soldered onto the motherboard; no way to easily change it without replacing the entire motherboard. You would have to have the proper equipment to be able to remove and replace the surface mounted IC. It may be possible to install a PCMCIA ethernet adapter or a USB one but looking at the online BIOS simulator for the T30, there does not seem to be any way to permanently disable the controller on the motherboard.

Can you confirm that the BIOS can disable the built-in Ethernet controller? The BIOS simulator did not seem to have that function.

From BIOS Version 1IET64WW (2.03) onwards that's possible:
update in 2.03:
* (New) Added a BIOS option to disable a function of the built-in network card to expand a usable DOS memory area.

Thanks for the info RBS. That's what I get for relying on the online BIOS simulator :) . I did not see any way to disable the ethernet controller.

All T30 mobos support a touchpad, and can also run without it.

Lets re-visit this thread.......................
Forget about the soldering, look at the errors.

Initializing Intel(R) Boot Agent Version 4.1.07
PXE-E05: The LAN adapter configuration is corrupted or has not been
initialized
Boot Agent cannot continue

ERROR
Expansion Rom not initialized - PCI on Motherboard
Bus:00, Device:00, Function:00,
Press <F1> to Setup

Im already at BIOS 2.08, when I disable the network adapter, it hangs with the curser in the upper left corner.
When I enable the network adapter it throws both errors..

The T60 thread basically flashes a new Intel Boot order.
Any suggestions?

I would try the following (if you already haven't):

- Access BIOS and perform a "Load Setup Defaults" (under the Restart menu)
- Verify that the boot order has a bootable device before the IBA entry (Startup/Boot menu); you could also try disabling the IBA by highlighting that line and pressing the Insert key. That should place an exclamation mark before the line indicating the device has been disabled.

Loading setup defaults, causes the error every time.
Boot order does not seem to matter, If in BIOS the network is not disabled it throws the error.
If its disabled, it hangs on the cursor.

Got a work around by fiddling with Ray's idea.
I deleted the IBA network boot from the boot order and it appears to be working. Does not fix my issue, but bypasses it.

Any ideas on the fix?

I've had the same error last year or the year before.
I hunted around and found IBAutil from Intel: http://www.intel.com/support/network/ad ... 008212.htm
All you need to do is run this from a bootable CD or floppy: IBAUtil.exe -DEFCFG
to set the bootagent back to the default configuration, and it resets the checksum as well.

OK got back to this today, and succeeded in breaking the stupid thing again.

Back to the flashing curser on boot:
Ran the Intel Boot Agent "reformat"
Upgraded the BIOS and Embedded Controller

Suggestions?
