T21 with a screen that goes dark if a media drive is inside

#1 Post by Unknown_K » Tue Jan 19, 2010 9:50 pm

I got a T21 in today with an odd problem. The unit works, but the screen goes dark if you install a removable drive (tried a floppy drive and a DVD/CDRW from my T23). The removable drives do work, but I am stuck using an external monitor to do installs. The second you pop the removable drive out of the bay the screen comes back on.

Any ideas what is going on?

The back rear corner of the Ultrabay 2000 cage either has a bracket over or near the LCD cable. That's where I would look. Take the covers off and see if you can make the display blank by pushing on things in that area. Conversely put a drive in the with covers off and keyboard connected and see exactly what is happening. The LCD cover switch is back there too....check that as well.

I didn't notice anything that looked weird (took the unit apart to look). Will take a closer look at the LCD cover switch again. using an external keyboard.

I don't see anything obviously wrong. Pressing on parts doesn't change anything. I even changed the inverter board to see if something was flacky there and same thing. The combination of having a drive (cdrw or floppy) in the bay with the ejector mechanism making contact with the switch inside turns video on the LCD off, external video will fire up. Flicking the eject mechanism and sliding the drive out just a hair will make the LCD come back on. When the LCD is off you can see the text on the screen but no backlight (kind of like if you pressed slightly on the LCD closed switch on a working machine).

Fixed it finally. The problem was somebody had spilled some liquid into it and it was shorting out something underneath that small rear board where the I/O ports are located. I took the board out and washed it, dried it, and now the system works fine.

You know how it is, get stuck with a problem and it goes on the shelf until you get around to looking at it again.
