TriedTo Install RestoreIT on T23,Now Blue Error Screen-Help!
TriedTo Install RestoreIT on T23,Now Blue Error Screen-Help!
quick specs: t23, win xp pro sp3, 40GB HD, 1G RAM...
last nite, tried to install the older, XP-issued, RestoreIT v5, one of my all-time favorite system backup/restore apps, and met with disaster instead. immediately got the blue screen of death.
shut down, rebooted, same thing. every time i try to reboot now, same thing. tried to reboot from safe mode from BIOS, same thing.
here's the stop message at the bottom of the blue error screen: STOP: 0x0000007E (0xc0000005, 0x867766fc, 0xf7c83c9c, 0xf7c83998)
any suggestions what to do before i start dialing around techs? did i irretrievably fry the HD?

That looks like a SYSTEM_THREAD_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED error.
Did you get a driver name after STOP error line ? If so, that's the code in error.

no driver name. the STOP msg contained only the string of numbers and letters as i posted it above.
p.s.: on another tech site, someone mentioned this could happen when trying to install reformatting/backup software because the new partition wasnt properly labeled or something along those lines. i think this most probly happened to me. alas, that person never offered the fix after making the diagnosis. lol

I hesitate to ask the following but ...
Can you restore your system using the backup/restore product you were previously using ?

Re: TriedTo Install RestoreIT on T23,Now Blue Error Screen-Help!
I was afraid you would say that.
I assume you've tried Safe Mode ?

Here is some (hopefully) helpful stuff from M$: http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=321637&sd=RMVP
Further down on that page are various other options.
See if you can boot up in Safe Mode. Hit F8 a couple of times as soon as it starts booting.
If you can, try and undo what you did.

Sorry, I can see you've tried Safe Mode.
Any possibility of pulling the drive out and placing it in a USB enclosure to see if the disk structure is still intact, as you mentioned someone else had a similar problem whereby the logical structure became damaged.

assuming i can get into safe mode, what am i looking for to fix?
the restoreit app didnt even install (thats when the blue screen first appeared)
someone on another tech site mentioned something about the disk partitioning having gone awry and the system thinking its out of disk space or something like that given thats what goes wrong when installing backup/restore type apps. how would i go about fixing that from safe mode? sorry if this is a basic question, but ive never done that before.

Now there's the rub.
Usually it's a case of locating the broken software/driver and removing it but if you say the software didn't install there may be little to find.
Have you tried the Last Known Good configuration option ? I've used that successfully before.
I have to admit that I haven't used safe mode for some years. If anything drastic ever happens now when I'm testing, I just restore my last system partition backup which is easier than trying to unpick things by hand. No help in your situation unfortunately.
Re: TriedTo Install RestoreIT on T23,Now Blue Error Screen-Help!
last known good configuration likewise leads to the same blue screen.
i hit F8 again to enter safe mode, and this is what happened: lines starting with 'disk partition' or something or other filled the screen and then the blue screen appeared again with the following message: DRIVER-IRQL-NOT-LESS_OR-EQUAL
then the system rebooted automatically and eventually reached the blue screen as usual

Re: TriedTo Install RestoreIT on T23,Now Blue Error Screen-Help!
If you can get your hands on a copy of erd 2007, I would boot that and do a partial system restore. Also, have you run chkdsk? It could be as simple as corrupted sys files. Some forums suggest several things, one was to disable usb in the bios.
