T20 will not power down on battery power

#1 Post by micl9 » Sat Feb 06, 2010 11:48 am

Hi All,
Sorry if this topic is out there already, but I searched and only found a plethora of BOD threads. Which dealt more with not powering up and I have the opposite problem!
Anyway here is my problem.
I have a T20 (2647-21U) with BIOS 1.19 and a fresh XP Home install.
When on battery power:
If I shut down via XP - it restarts after shutdown.
If I force a power-down (hold pwr key) - it stays off but will not power back up (pwr key does nothing) until either;
  • a) I pull the battery and when I reinsert the battery it starts by itself before pwr key is hit.
    b) I plug into AC pwr - it does not start up by itself, but starts normally when the pwr key is pushed.
When on AC power:
If I shut down via XP - it stays shutdown. And power key functions normally to turn back on.
If I force a power-down (hold pwr key) - it stays off. Battery indicator blinking green. And power key functions normally to turn back on.
If unit is off and I pull the ac power it starts up by itself.
Essentially when on AC power it behaves normally.

Batteries do charge when on AC and I have tried different batteries that work in one of my other laptops, a T21.

I am getting ready to sell this laptop and it works fine other than not being able to shut it down when on battery power. Looking to see if I sell as part/repair or working unit. Right now its a little of both. :(

Thanks in advance...

Try swapping keyboards with your other T2x.
You may have a stuck power key!

 THATS IT!!!!!!!!!!

 Thank you RBS! Thank you!

Is it possible to repair?

Anybody have a T20/21/22 keypad? Apparently T23 is different.

Of course now I am [censored] because guess what else I replaced a while back when I swapped out the mother board....
....the keyboard! I always thought it was a flaky mobo.

Thanks again RBS!

You're welcome!
Keyboards are the same for T20/1/2/3, so any one will do.
I doubt if you can repair them.
The only difference is the frame that goes around the IBM/Power button, they may say T20 or T21 or T22 or T23.
They are interchangeable.

Well here's what happens when you swap out a mobo the week before you move.
I went digging thru my bone pile and came across a T21 base unit (w/ keyboard) tucked up on a shelf in my closet. Then it dawned on me this T20 started out as a T21 which got BOD. I had bought a base unit off eBay and rather than swap boards I just swapped bases... ...and keypads. Ever since that swap this unit has had the power up issue, I just never had time or motivation to debug.
But wait it gets better. The original T21 has an 800MHz CPU - which I never thought to put into the T20 base - which had a 650 CPU
So for almost 2 yrs my poor wife used this laptop that could not be shut off when on battery power AND was dog slow!
Well today I fixed the power on and finally swapped the CPUs.

So now I have a T20 1/2 which actually runs quite nice. :D

Thanks again RBS, you kicked off quite a chain of events!
