Memory upgrade in T22 - half of RAM visible

#1 Post by gargul » Mon Feb 15, 2010 6:24 am

Hi,

I finally decided to upgrade RAM of my mother's in law T22. I bought 2 modules of SDRAM FRU 33L3070 labelled with IBM stickers (256 MB, PC100, 32Mx64, 3.3 V SN, doublesided, 8 banks per side) but when both are installed in T22 only 256 of RAM is visible in BIOS and in Win XP then. When I remove one module and only one left in laptop system is not starting and only beeps come from speaker. I'm not sure if something should be changed in BIOS while upgading RAM? I don't see any settings but maybe?

Any hints from you?

Thanks a lot!

Swap modules, try both of them in each slot one at a time. What happens with only one in the system?

Thanks - it works finally! But it was strange, I've started with module 1 in slot 1 and module 2 in slot 2 -> only 256 MB available. So I've changed module 1 to slot 2 and module 2 to slot 1 -> no booting, only beeps. Last try was with first combination 1 in 1, 2 in 2 and it works :) I don't even try to find what was wrong.

If you are interested I can help you with cheap 256 MB modules (FRU 33L3070) available in Poland. Price is about 20$, here is an example on Polish bidding service: http://www.allegro.pl/show_item.php?item=905368012

If you (need to) take them out again, use a pencil eraser to clean the gold contacts on both sides.
Rubbing the eraser will make them nice and shiny, and remove the tarnishing.
Don't forget to clean off the eraser bits before you put them back in.
Lovely day for a Guinness! (The Real Black Stuff)
