T21 fan good enough for a 1Ghz CPU upgrade?
T21 fan good enough for a 1Ghz CPU upgrade?
I have assumed the answer is NO and am looking for a 26P9317, T22 fan. Read somewhere that it had better cooling...

Is aT21 fan sufficient when upgrading to a 1GHz CPU?

Re: T21 fan good enough for a 1Ghz CPU upgrade?
No. I installed a T22 fan when I upgraded my CPU to a 1GHz. (see my sig info) Depending what I am doing, the fan can cycle on and off quite a bit. I can only imagine that if I hadn't upgraded it, the original T21 fan would probably never cycle off.

Thanks Gary
That's what I thought, but good to have a data point to back it up.

If you want to do some additional reading, here is the original (old) topic where I and a few others did the upgrade. It includes some actual temp readings using Mobilemeter, before and after the upgrade.

Wow. That was 4 years ago and my T21 is still chugging along.

Guess where I just realized I read it - your post from that thread!
Man my brain can't remember 30 sec a go!
I will have to check the rules on digging up old threads, but if force flashing T21 BIOS on T20 allows for a 1MHz CPU it would be good to link the info back to that thread.
Thanks Gary

Do bear in mind that the Coppermine 1Ghz CPU you're about to install is one of the hottest running mobile CPUs ever...

Re: T21 fan good enough for a 1Ghz CPU upgrade?
don't think I ever changed a fan (a20 upgrade to 1GHz too) or in my A31p to 2.4GHz but nothing ever failed or was returned. Did the fan run more. no clue. I'm sure upgrading couldn't hurt but I don't think it will fail if you don't.
Sure I've changed fans with motherboard swaps that needed them but not for a T20, a20 or A31p upgrade.

Re: T21 fan good enough for a 1Ghz CPU upgrade?
I hadn't checked my CPU temp with mobilemeter in quite some time, so I just started it to see what its reading. Without a heavy CPU load, the temp is running between 50-60°C. That's with the larger T22 fan/heatsink assy and the T21 sitting on a chillpad with its fans running. That's about 10° hotter than when I first upgraded the CPU.
The fan cycles on and off as it should and I don't think there is any dirt build-up on it, but it may be time to take it apart clean it out and re-apply some new Artic Silver.
EDIT: I let it settle out a little longer with no application programs running (just booted with the WinXP wallpaper displayed) and mobilemeter is showing a constant 42°C. That's pretty close to what it was when I first did the upgrade.
Guess I'm still OK.
