T22 - will not read DVD+R

#1 Post by lemonstar » Sat Jun 05, 2010 3:32 pm

I bought a DVD drive (Matshita [Panasonic I think] SR-8175) for my T22 (originally it just had a CD). Seems to be no problem with the drive reading free DVD's from newspapers, commercial DVD's or even some older DVD's (unknown type) I've burned. THe only problem seems to be with reading the Tevion DVD+R's I bought and burned recently. I started buying the DVD+R's as I understand that they are a newer format than the DVD-R so is the reason the drive won't recognize them simply that it wasn't designed to read them (and can't) or is there something about the burn process I need to get right?

I went to the IBM website to get the Optical Disc Drive Firmware Update Utility(January,16, 2007) Release FWOD08 (an iso file you burn and reboot your machine with) and it did update the drivers. Is there a spec. recommending the best type or types of DVD I should use?

I've seen a couple of comments on the net saying that they CAN read DVD+R with this drive and others saying it CAN NOT. Anyone know the facts?

I've just ordered some DVD-R's - haven't arrived yet so thought I'd check here in case the +R/-R thing is a complete red-herring.

TIA
Neil

It will not do DVD-RAM

"For support of OEM drive, basically, we recommend you to refer to the shop where you purchased it.When the drive has been mounted in a PC, please follow the instructions of the PC maker.Incapable of DVD-RAM(2.6GB / 4.7GB)"

Im still researching

Took me a little while to find an SR-8175 drive in my stockpile but I found one, installed it into a T23 and used DVDInfoPro to read the drive's capabilities. That program reports that DVD+R is not supported (nor are DVD+RW's either it seems).

Thanks everyone for your replies. I'm looking forward to the DVD-R's arriving but I've got some reburning to do unfortunately. As the famous quote goes "that's the beauty of standards - there are so many to choose from!"
