T30 Poor Full Screen video qualty

#1 Post by izod13 » Thu Sep 02, 2010 10:06 pm

hey all,

So i am looking to pick some brains concerning a problem with my T30 2366-23S (1.8ghz, upgraded to a single 1gig RAM module with one available slot remaining) playing full screen video without noticeable frame flicker.

I have played DVDs and streamed video from You Tube and Netflix with similar results (lower res video plays much better then higher res vids). I even restarted my computer to clear all RAM then played a video immediately and checked RAM useage while playing video and it hovered around 55-60%.

Since it did come with a DVD player i am assuming it was designed to be capable of playing a DVD without issue. I know the onboard ATI Radeon GPU utilzes 16MB of dedicated memory which isnt much. But i believe it also shares system RAM so with 1 gig and no other processes running i would think i should have enough available memory.

Any experience with this or suggestions?

Thanks!!

You could try another DVD player, such as VLC, or load more advanced codecs.
Or get a docking station and use it's DVI output.

"External monitor support via analog DB-15 connector / up to 2048x1536x16.7M colors at 75Hz / DDC2B / supports external digital monitor via the Digital Video Interface (DVI) port on either of the optional docking solutions"

Your GPU is not capable of sharing the system ram, so 16MB is all that's there, not really much nowadays. Choppy videos are to be expected, you may want to try modded drivers and see whether it helps.

Good luck.

Reduce the screen resolution to 800x600 and the color depth to 16 bits.

This has worked for me, in the past.

I have often wondered the same thing about having to work around it, when these machines, dating back to the 600 series came with a DVD player. If it came with it, shouldn't it play them natively? I understand that DVDs have changed a great deal over time, including the quality, which might hinder it. I might have to pull out one of my old 600s and see if it will make a difference playing one of my really old DVDs...

I have a T30, 2GHz, 16MB ATI graphics, Windows XP, very similar to yours. Still use it daily. Never had a problem playing DVDs using the old copy of WinDVD that came with it. Other file formats up to roughly DVD resolution (720x480), perhaps a bit beyond, have not been a problem either in Windows Media Player. Full HD videos are very choppy with a new frame shown only every 1 or 2 seconds; I don't think I've tried 720p ... it's probably too much for it also. Flash (YouTube) is more demanding and even a DVD resolution flash video may be choppy; generally best to stick to somewhat lower resolutions there. FYI, I always run in XGA (1024x768) and the full 32-bit color depth. A reduction should not be necessary in my experience.
