Help to fix dead T23

#1 Post by Taavi » Sun Nov 21, 2010 4:20 pm

Hi!
I bought one broken T23. Only thing it does is when you plug power cord in, battery, sleep and that thrid LED will illuminate. When pressing power button, all leds go off and nothing hapends. When I remove and put cord back in, it all starts again. No beeps and cpu fan also wont start. I removed everything (including cpu) but still same story. I found that one inductor is loos (the one that causes fan problems). I will let to solder it back but is there anything else i should specially look? Other inductors seems to be correctly in place (cant get them off with finger). Also tried with battery but then it is totaly dead.
Thanks if anybody have time to help.

Welcome to thinkpads.com!

It sounds like the motherboard has a major problem but there is one other thing you can try. Remove all of the hardware that plugs into the laptop, except the CPU; that needs to be in. For the moment we will assume that the CPU is working. Take out the hard drive, all of the memory, the MiniPCI card and the Ultrabay drive. Plug in the power supply and turn on the laptop. It should give you the 1-3-3-1 beep code (1 short beep, pause, 3 short beeps, pause, 3 short beeps, pause, 1 short beep). If you do not get the 1-3-3-1 beep code, then either the CPU is bad or the motherboard is bad. If you hear the beep code, then turn off the system and install ONE memory module. Turn it back on again and see if it boots normally. If it does, then I would suspect that the MiniPCI card is defective. When those cards go bad, it can look like the system has a major power problem.

It doesn't have memory and hdd (bought it just for fun :D ) Its on my table without anything connected to it except CPU. I think that only thing I can do is to let my friend to "cook" it. She works in electronic company and they are capable to do that. Maybe there is just some connection problems. If this doesn't help, just have to look new MB or CPU because im TP fan and like to get it up and running. Love thinkpads after first 390 and now im using T400.

Just tried w/o CPU and excactly the same thing. All 3 LED (battery one is 2 color and both color illuminate), illuminates. As soon as I push power button, leds will shut and wont light until I remove and put back power cord. So i quess that this MB is dead.
