Bios loses System Date/Time...

#1 Post by robert213 » Mon Mar 14, 2011 3:09 pm

I own two IBM T30's -- one, I use everyday; the other, I use occassionally.

Yesterday, I attempted to power on the seldom-used T30 and the BIOS gave me System Date/Time Error.

So, I am browsing through my FAQ post on T30's...
http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.php?f=31&t=52591

System service parts - ThinkPad T30
http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... 42335.html
Backup battery
All models 02K6572
Is this the battery that I need to replace?

While I'm in the process of in replacing batteries, I've noticed that the main battery in my everyday machine isn't what it used to be.

I've read in the T60/T61 forum that folks prefer Panasonic over Sanyo. Does this hold true for older T30's as well?
Battery pack, Li-Ion (6 cell) 2.2 Ah Panasonic
for all models except xxJ 02K7037 1
models xxJ 02K7038 1
Battery pack, Li-Ion (6 cell) 2.2 Ah Sanyo
for all models except xxJ 02K7072 1
models xxJ 02K7073 1
It appears that my old battery is a Sanyo...
My battery says
Field Replacement Number: 02K7072
OEM Number: 02K7034

10.8 Volts
The last time that I replaced a battery (for something much older than a T30), I purchased one from American Power Conversion (APC).

Where is everyone's favorite source for batteries? Does anyone have a favorite e-Bay seller?

G'Day Robert;
Not sure if I understand your issues well -
if you problem is "BIOS" data loss due to LACK OF USE....
than I can suggest a few simple things to fix this....
>InGeneral if you leave your THINKPAD plugged into any outlet, than it wont give you that error(Thinpad has internal Battery - Bios data is generally powered from that when unplugged) SO if you plug (eg overnight) your TP would 'recharge' your internal & external battery. This might cure your problem without any more costs!!!

I havent used T30(my t3x were donted to schools in Africa) for loooooong time now but do remember this same issue with a T43p that did have the same issue - due to not being used for 6mths+.....

Hope this is of some help
Cheers

Sorry to contradict you: a CMOS battery as used in Thinkpads is NOT rechargeable.
It works independent from main battery or AC, and can last for up to, or even over, 5 years.
When you lose date/time, you should replace that CMOS battery.
Lovely day for a Guinness! (The Real Black Stuff)

I ran my machine for over 3 hours yesterday on AC power. Tonight, I still received the System Date/Time CMOS error.

While shopping on e-Bay, I wasn't able to find a new IBM FRU 02K6572 -- all I saw were sellers from China.

I purchased a used OEM IBM FRU 02K6572 pulled from a working T500...

I hope that I didn't make a mistake!!

After re-installing software from IBM Recovery CD(s), it seems that I never initialized "Battery MaxiMiser". I now have it set on - "On Screen Presentation".

Clicking Once on Green Battery Icon on Task Bar
and Select "Battery Information"
[Battery Health]
shows a "Red" Battery
with "Cycle Count" of 67.

Anyone have a better suggestion than this...

Genuine IBM FRU 02K7072 Battery for use with IBM Thinkpad T30
We received these batteries from a company that went out of business. Because these batteries are out of the box and some have minor scuffs we are selling them as used. The majority of the batch have never been installed in a laptop, but we are selling these as used. Bid with confidence, we provide a 30-day unconditional warranty with these genuine IBM batteries. If you're unhappy for any reason return the battery for a full refund.
I did notice that the Title says 02K7037 (i.e. Panasonic) even though the description says 02K7072 (i.e. Sanyo).

I plan to call Lenovo parts tomorrow at 1-800-IBM-SERV (1-800-426-7378) Also, my notes show 1-800-388-7080 (Mechanicsburg, PA and Boulder, CO)

This battery arrived from e-computerparts in Rosedale MD, two days later and I am about to install it after I write this post.
--Edit--
The most difficult part was re-threading the red and black wires back inside of the battery support/mount. I allowed myself 1/2 inch of slack at the white connector and re-threaded the red wire first and the black wire second. Then, I pushed on the white connector and pulled on the red & black wires to make them taut again. Also, I neglected to see the white plug inside of the machine, so I did not line up the white connector properly on my first try. Once the white connector of battery was lined up with white plug inside of machine, everything worked fine. Instructions here...
http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... 43064.html

Original battery was: Panasonic Lithium CR2032, IBM 02K6541. FRU 02K6572

ThinkPad 02K7037 IBM ORIGINAL LENOVO GENUINE THINKPAD LAPTOP NOTEBOOK T LITHIUM BATTERY PACK-P-6 -- $14.00
A 02K7037 arrived from "Thinkpad-parts" (DBA ACS Outlet) in Akron OH, the next day.

Using Battery Miser (on the taskbar from my Recovery CD) shows "Green" battery with:
42.82 Wh out of a possible 47.52 Wh
38 Cycle Count
First installed 2003-09

Hope this info helps the next T30 owner shopping for parts.
