T23 Thinkpad Cmos Battery?

#1 Post by austinbyrnes » Thu May 05, 2011 7:53 am

hello,

my aunt asked me to have a look at her ibm t23 she has had for years. she does windows updates regular and the system has never given her an issue until this week i get the following errors:

0271 error: check date and time settings.
0251 error: System CMOS checksum bad. Default configuration used

so i assume it was cmos battery issue, anyway ive since bought a new cmos battery for it and still get the same error message on boot up.

only other thing i can think of is must be motherboard.

anything else i can do to rule out the board.

but what about doing a bios update might that help????

any help on this please.

After you replaced the battery did you go into BIOS and set the time/date? (hold down F1 on boot)

I'd take the new?? battery out and check it's voltage with a multimeter. Should be close to 3v DC.

i think its battery related. i just learned something.

when i reboot the system on a/c power i get no error watsoever.

only on battery power do i get the message so i assume once again its cmos not the actual battery.

the actual battery charges as normal when plugged into a/c power.

There are very few things that go wrong with the CMOS battery on these...either it is bad or the connector at the systemboard is loose or broken. So if the connector looks solid the battery is most likely bad. I don't recall having tested what a bad CMOS battery will do on AC vs main battery power, so I'm no help there.

It took me two attempts to install the Bios Battery in my T30 correctly...
