t30 processor speed married to motherboard?
t30 processor speed married to motherboard?
I'm rebuilding a t30 and am unsure if I should purchase a mb on ebay without the processor. Is the speed of the processor matched to the motherboard? Is the mb made to go with a particular speed processor? Can I swap out 1.6GHz, and replace w/ 1.8, 2.0, 2.2?
Can't think of any other ways to ask this...

They will generally swap.
There are 2 different motherboards, and at least 2 different fans. I have run up to 2.0 gig CPUs with no issues on all of the MoBos. When you go higher than that, you tend to get over heating.

Re: t30 processor speed married to motherboard?
The main system board controls the machine's speed. These are all P4M CPUs, but they are RATED for a max speed (sort of like speed rated tires). Now that said if you put a 1.6GHz CPU in a 1.6GHz system you are overclocking the CPU with associated attendant risks. the reverse should not pose any problems.

The motherboard sets the bus speed. The multiplier is set on the CPU chip. - (Condensed version of the story.)

Re: t30 processor speed married to motherboard?
OK, both of your posts confused me, and I have worked on them!
I have run up to a 2.0 CPU on both boards, no issues.
If you attempt to run higher than the 2.0 CPU on the lower board (1.6 or 1.
I personally have run into over heat issues.
My Winblows machine was an early 1.6 and the fan runs most of the time, with the 2.0 installed.
My Macbuntu machine was a later 1.8 and the fan never runs.
When I swapped the HDD the 1.6 machine ran hot on the Linux.
Hope that helps

Re: t30 processor speed married to motherboard?
Two types of boards, and three types of fans exist for the T30 generation.
Type I board was meant to be used with 1.6/1.8 CPUs.
Type II with everything above.
That being said, I've ran 2.0 CPUs on Type I board, but with a proper fan for that CPU speed.
Honestly, anything about 2.0 is overkill on these machines IMHO since the performance gain doesn't justify the extra heat.
