Old T23 LCD cover rubber comes off

#1 Post by ChibiM » Tue Jul 05, 2011 9:55 am

Just got my hands on an old T23 for a few bucks,
but the cover of this laptop feels like rubber, and its very sensitive.
When I use my nails, the rubbery stuff comes right off.

I just uploaded some short video`s to show what Im talking about.. please see them Here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sUqZ0sDKDSA
and Here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6pNz2yJyrUY

How can I get this rubber off, without scratching the plastic panel, and without hurting my finger by using my nails ;) ?

When I search on google, I just find ads for buying different panels, and stickers and what not.

please help me with some solutions..

well, first, DON'T scratch the top with your fingernail.. :)

that is rubberized paint on that T23..
when it gets old that is one fault such paint has..

if you want to restore that panel to what it was when it was new, get a new cover from IBM/lenovo..
(who ever has the old boulder parts operation)..
in japan though i'm not sure where you can get new plastic (pretty sure its not plastic) parts..
you can also find an auto paint shop and see if they can advise getting the old paint off and repainting the top cover..

but my guess is it'll be cheaper to just find a new top cover..

If you look for another cover, be aware that there are 2 versions of LCD lid, one without , and one with built-in wifi antenna wires.
The 14.1" lids are otherwise identical between T20/T21/T22/T23

Thanks both of you!

I went ahead and took the rubbery stuff off with an old cd..
the stuff was too weak, so whenever I touched it with something, it got some scratches..

now almost all the rubber is off,

I was just watching Ebay and they also sell "Laptop skin covers" which might be a neat solution..

anyway, ill keep an eye out for a cover....

Thanks again..

I never did find a good paint for IBM thinkpads, would be nice to repaint some old machines (and a couple Apple Powerbook G3's with the same type of rubber paint).
