Dear Diary: My New/Used T61p ...

#1 Post by Annecy » Sun May 06, 2018 12:15 am

Yesterday/Friday (4May2018) ...
my new/used (08/08 nVidia) T61p ... found/purchased on eBay ... arrived ...

For various reasons ... I want to "chronicle" the experience ...
of making this ThinkPad ... mine Image
(This is the 1st laptop/"computer" I'ver ever bought off of eBay :? )

Who knows ...
Maybe (any) readers might ... from time to time ...
have comments/tips/answers ... to post
:jhem:

Best of luck with your new project. I recently did my own "customization" to a new/used T61p which was also purchased from eBay. Much of what I did was received with negativity but I hope you enjoy the challenge and make it your own. Thats what owning a ThinkPad is all about!

Of course I'm guessing you already have a potential CPU upgrade in mind for this build?

And no ThinkPad upgrade would be complete without a solid state drive...
AMD Phenom II 965 @ 4.1Ghz, 8GB DDR3 1600, SSD
AMD Phenom II 960T @ 4.1Ghz, 8GB DDR3 1600, SSD
Lenovo T61p 15.4" - Core 2 extreme X9000 CPU @ 3.4Ghz, SSD
Toshiba Satellite A505D - 2.5Ghz, 4GB RAM, 80GB SSD

Posts like the above ...
(imo) make the
TP.c Support Community truly a "SupportCommunity"

This project is (has been ... for various reasons) "off to a slow start" ...

This (past) WeekEnd I (amongst other "things" ... finally)
found some WWW-resources regarding:

How to "utilize" a WinDOZE OEM "license"/key with/in a fresh install of WinDOZE ~
which would (then) be free of (not only) all associated OEM "bloatware" ...

This morning I followed the above ...
and have (seemingly) successfully installed/ACTIVATED
a (generic) Win7-Pro install ~ with the W7Pro OEM-"key"
that came with my new/used T61p :thumbs-UP:

I had previously used the following:

MS Win&Office ISO DownloadTool
to download various (genuine) Win7 iso files ...
I (then) followed the following:

Add MS Win ISO to USB install/boot stick
to put a (downloaded) W7Pro iso onto a bootable usb "install" stick ...
The whole "install/activation" this morning took less than an hour

I have not yet/ever owned/used a "full-blown" SSD ...

During the past week I sourced a (CL/free) 500gb 7200rpm 4gb SSHD ...
and this past WeekEnd (also) "evaluated" that SSHD ...
(in my T61ws) and found "performance" (noticeably) below what I had/have
with my "install" HDD as a simple/"straight"
HGST Travelstar 1TB 7200 RPM 32MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s
I (would/still) presume that a "full-blown" SSD would outperfrom
that simple/"straight" 1tb 7200 SATA install HDD I'm currently/still using :?:

I have (also) read that a WinDOZE install should (optimally) be done
freshly on/to a/ny SSD ~ as opposed to cloning an/y install on/to a/ny SSD :?:
SOOO/seemingly ...
now would be the time to "go for" an SSD ... in my new/used T61p :?:

ps:
~ Does anyone have any (CDM/HDT) benchmarking results
that quantify the performance I SHOULD see ... with/by using an SSD :?:

Should my "MiddletonBIOS" T61ws be yielding
(much) better CDM benchmarking results than the following :?::

Image

pss/btw: Yes, there has also been "CPU-modding" ...
in the grand scheme of things ...
more on that ... ("a bit") later ...
I hope :!: :jhem:

Great to hear your project is progressing in the right direction.
I would highly recommend you first and foremost ditch the rusting hulk of your mechanical hard drive and replace it with an SSD.
You can buy a used 80GB SSD on eBay for about $35.00 shipped. Huge return on that investment. It's the single most important upgrade you can do relative to performance. If you can find a caddy (they are rare) you can replace your existing DVD ROM with your mechanical hard drive if you wish to have a storage drive.

As for the CPU, I would recommend a T9300 or T9500 C2D.

If you want bragging rights, might as well go all way to the top and get a core 2 extreme X9000. They can be had for about $44 shipped. This runs at 2.8Ghz stock and have an unlocked multiplier so you can overclock using ThrottleStop. I currently have my T61p running this processor @ 3.4Ghz stable. I have pushed it to 4.0Ghz for fun, but it runs much to hot at that speed and the stock cooling cannot cope. Be forewarned if you do choose the X9000 it is a beast and you'll need all the cooling you can get.

Please post some pictures of your build, would love to see it!

@Annecy, you scared me. I saw the image of "System Failure" and I expected something much more grim. That T61p will take you far, well that's if the battery gives more than 2 hours :D !
Probably should be Thinkpad16by10.

Looking For: 386 laptop, IBM or not.
