T61 setup reasonable price

#1 Post by sestulak » Wed May 23, 2018 8:05 am

Cheers ThinkPad lovers, I have got a bit burning question for you all. I'm considering buying mighty T61 (14" widescreen, C2D T7500, 2GB RAM, 100GB HDD, and luckyly X3100) the seller also adds ThinkVision 19" IBM keyboard (not the Model M :P), dock, original power adapter (and I'm aware these are worth nothing). Do my question is how much should I pay? (I want to use it as my daily driver to take it with me everywhere i go withouth minding any scratches.)

In Europe I guess about €60-80 max. if it has 1280x800 LCD.
Maybe up to €100 if it has 1440x900.
It's very hard to find batteries for a 14.1" widescreen.
It's also not exactly a lightweight machine.
Lovely day for a Guinness! (The Real Black Stuff)

T61 in 16:10 14,1" is super-comparable to T400. T400 on the other hand is very reliable, way faster, super-cool running machine that has only one, simple to manuever, flaw: poor keyboard. However, any T6x/Z6x/R6x keyboard is compatible with it.

If very cheap, the likes of 70-80 Euros for such system in a REALLY nice shape and with working battery, I'd go for it. But this is the only case. Thinkvision LCDs are sheer junk, and 2504 dock is worth ~1Euro. Have in mind you'll need to invest ~12-15Euros to get a decent 4gigs of ram (or around 60-70 to get 8 gigs), and another ~10Euros to get T8300 CPU (now maybe a little less). I do not mention the HDD and so on. Genuine PSU is an important thing imo.

If you are looking for a well-built, inexpensive thinkpad, PM me or ask on the marketplace; there are many forum users from Czech / Slovakia / Slovenia / Poland hat do have some of their systems for sale. And getting one from someone in here is actually a safe method of getting a working system.
If you are into this certain T61, do have in mind what RBS wrote: a good, genuine battery for this one is almost impossible to get, especially the 4-cell. If looking for a 14" lightweight, go for T400. If looking for a super-lightweight and are willing to work on 12", go for X61/X200/X201/X220. If going for a _MIGHTY_ unit get either R61i in 4:3 ratio (still possible to find in your nearest neighbourhood) or T61 in 4:3 ratio and rebuild it to get a frankenpad.

This post has been brough to you with 4:3 R61i ;)

I have sold a similar unit couple of weeks ago. Was tightening my TP stable.

The price for this one was 85Euros, and it ended just like that.

HOWEVER

The shape was _PERFECT_, battery was genuine and like new, 1440x900 display, revised nVidia GPU, native Penryn w/T8100, 4 gigs of DDR2 and 320Gb HDD. Just to let you know what money are "payable" for such system ;) Generally 14,1" WS tend to be the cheapest of all T/R units.
