T61 Dead !

#1 Post by Param » Wed Dec 07, 2011 5:31 pm

Few weeks back my T61 was dead with 3 beeps due to Faulty nVidia Chip, I was expecting this after i came know about the well known nVidia issues with NVS 140 M chip.

I am planning to buy a used T61 14 wide in ebay.in and want to swap my HDD and RAM (DDR2), as the T61 motherboard with intel GPU and old system more or less costs the same.

Please let me know the compatibility of swapping HDD from my old Thinkpad 15.4 wide to new one 14 wide. I hope there shouldn't be any problem, and also Can i swap DVD RW from my old to the new one, if it has CD ROM Drive?

Thanks
Param

You can swap HDD, CD, RAM, wifi/modem/other cards, keyboard.
The 14.1" has a different HD cover from the 15.4".

Originally, there were 2 sets of recovery CDs, one for 15.4" and one for 14.1" ones, but they were combined. It should be an easy swap. It will probably need to reboot for different devices and you will need to install a video driver if you go to intel graphics.

If you want a 15.4 unit with the updated nvidia chip, I have a few. As long as you have a production date of 08/08 or better, the nvidia chip isn't likely to fail, but if you prefer intel graphics, they aren't bad as long as your not going to do a lot of graphics or gaming.

And the advice you have here is correct, swapping your drives and ram is effortless, and after some driver updates you'll be running good as new.

Any parts you may need, harddrive covers, whatever, I have them.
