I recently purchased a new (OS) Boe Hydis screen to put in a T60 and yesterday after I finished assembling everything and powered up I got two beeps and a dark screen.

At first I thought the two beeps signaled a bad motherboard, which was why the screen was dark. But after hooking it up to an external monitor the picture was bright. After powering up again I found out the initial 2 beeps were for the CMOS time & date not being set. So I set that and booted up and still the screen is dark. You can barely see the thinkpad logo on boot.

So far I've already switched inverters, rechecked everything, and still the screen is dark.

I then switched screens to an XGA screen and that one worked fine.

So it would appear that I got a bad screen, but before I contact the seller for a return, I just want to make sure that I'm not missing anything or forgetting to do something with the screen settings that's leading to a black screen. As I said it is likely the screen but OTOH the screen was new and from all apparent looks had never been used before, so I'm wondering if its something that I'm not doing.

Any help would be appreciated.

All resolutions use the same LCD cable (either with or without BlueTooth).
XGA has inverter 42T0077, but SXGA+ and UXGA require inverter 42T0079.
Did you check that?

Yup, I specifically purchased a UXGA inverter 42T0079 for the screen.

The "parts" T60 which I used as a base came with a 42T007 inverter so I have both. The screen is dim with either inverter .

On a lark could it be the LCD frame? I've read a couple of other places that people have had issues with dark screens when the metal has been in contact with the screen. Their screen works fine when free but once its screwed in they get a dark picture.

Could you be more specific regarding this particular BOE Hydis screen? Is it the original IBM FRU 13N7076 or one of the compatible varieties, like the HV150UX1-100 or possibly the HV150UX1-101? The original FRU 13N7076 usually consists of a HV150UX1-100 panel.

I once bought a HV150UX1-101 which was said to be compatible with the T60, but in the end wasn't. While the backlight did work, there was no display output. As it turned out, the required EDID information was missing from an equally missing EEPROM which is supposed to hold that information. As i already bought properly working HV150UX1-101 which actually had that EEPROM+EDID in the past, this was quite a deception. Luckily the vendor agreed on taking back the display panel.

Might this be the very same issue you are stumbling over with your display?

SXGA+ and UXGA work just fine with the XGA inverter. The screen just doesn't get as bright as with the SXGA+/UXGA inverter, but since this is just a fraction of a difference, this can hardly be noticed even for someone who knows.

Nope, I think we had different issues. The screen that I purchased was a Boe Hydis HV150UX1-100 (FRU:13N7076). As you stated this screen is an original that should work with a T60 right out of the box.

I still can't believe its dead, or that a new LCD has a backlight issue, but nothing else seems to add up and I don't know what else to try.

I thought of that and I tried to turn the LCD power connector around but I met resistance so I backed off figuring that it wasn't aligned correctly.

Time to return the screen, I guess...
