but now I have a second problem.

I can't restore XP (to a SSD) from a set of restore/recovery disks.

The RRs are v3.01. First I burned all 7 disks (1-6 & RR boot) to individual CDR with IMGBURN using the 'write image file to disc'.

I loaded RR to start the process and it booted fine. I selected the first option 'restore your system' data, and settings, from a backup.

Here is where the truble starts.

Step 2 asks 'Choose the Backup to restore from'. I use the drop-down and select CD/DVD. I now get a popup which says, "To restore a backup made to CD/DVD, please insert the disk labeled "Final C". To restore from a backup copied to a CD/DVD insert the last disk of the backset set. After inserting the correct disc, reselect CD/DVD in the location drpdown box.

Ok since I don't have a "final C"disk, I went to step two. Problem is after insert the CDR whenever I sgo back to the RR program to re-select CD/DVD the next box is greyed out and I can't select it, so I'm stuck.

Any solutions?

I believe that you should choose "restore to factory (whatever) " setting, if the restore disks that you have are burned from the recovery partition...you're really not restoring from a backup, at least in my understanding (which might be flawed since I'm tired and getting sick)...

You know what is really frightening aspect of this entire affair?

In three years I'll be doing open heart surgeries, yet dork-boy can't even figure out a program that most 5th graders could.

As usual you were correct, but I found the answer elsewhere in this post written by 91011 (http://67.214.227.38/~thinkpad/forum/vi ... 29&t=92168). Thing was "final c" isn't a valid, or fruitful, search term here so it took a while to backdoor the answer.

Well, let me share one little-known fact with you...

Decades ago, when I was at a funny crossroads of deciding on my future career, I almost ended up in the medical school. Wanted to be a psychiatrist. Dead serious.

Woke up one morning with the thought that my way of dealing with life in general could easily drive a less-than-stable person to suicide, so I gave the whole concept a second thought, and I'm glad I did. I still enjoy reading a lot of related stuff, but I've never regretted skipping that line of work.

You possess certain qualities highly desirable for a future surgeon: a sense of humour, along with one of self-depreciation. You'll do great.

When a lifetime of heavy smoking finally catches up with my arteries, I'll remind you of this thread... ...while you're studying a layout of a quadruple by-pass...

Just to update.

Bye-bye XP.........hello Windows 7.

It really was an easy transition after I figured out the proper commands for the recovery disks. Now that I look back on it my thinking never made any sense. For some reason I was operating under the assumption that the discs contained a, shall we say, virgin image of XP. So that's why I was looking to restore from the discs. But as I said common sense said that wasn't possible as the combined space of the 7 iso files was under 5gbs and XP's operating system has to be 12+ gigs.

Oh well I'm up and running 7 now, its such an improvement on XP, faster, and the install/updating process didn't take it 3hrs plus. SSD really is an improvement, it took 26 seconds for a complete boot from a cold start. I use to be able to start a pot of coffee with XP, and eat an entire breakfast before Vista loaded.

Now, if we can just get that screen changed, and get rid of this bump where the fingerprint reader is I'll be content for a couple of years.

Actually the full windows XP with all options is less then 700mb. When you install XP from recovery discs, you're not only installing windows, you're also installing all the software that came with the PC, AND you're installing a full set of recovery media and recovery software and on a separate partition.

I prefer to just install the OS without all the bloat. I also prefer to make three partitions on my harddrives, two for installing my windows version (two duplicate installs), and a third to store my data. This way if my OS gets hopelessly screwed up, I can reformat the drive and all my data stored in other partitions will be untouched.

The second OS allows me to stop what I'm doing and boot into the backup windows version if something goes wrong, then I'm up and running in less then a minute, and can then fix the problem at a time of my choosing instead of running and looking for another computer to finish what I was in the middle of doing.

ps. If only you could install a second Heart, one you can click on when your in a jam and send your other to the surgeon to get repaired

dont use xp. its out dated unsecured pos. plus you get whole bunch of crap outdated programs you dont need within the recovery set.

get 7 or vista sp2, do a clean install then make a "factory" image with rescue and recovery if you want to have the ability to recover to "factory settings" later
