Best LCD for Bad Eyes T60p 14.1in Screen

#1 Post by RoxyRose » Sun Dec 25, 2011 5:51 pm

So I just bought a T60p, and I love the speed, build quality, and weight of the machine. I think it is my dream machine. But the LCD is killing me. It is constantly hurting my eyes and making me nauseous. It is 42T0373, a TMD I believe. The brightness is mind blowing on high but useless any lower, the contrast feels high (although it is not), the colors are washed out, and the viewing angles are awful. Even with large fonts, and high dpi fonts, I feel like I am straining my eyes. I used to have a t40 with the same 1400x1050 resolution, so I don't think that is it. It feels like it has a shimmer to it. I have heard from a very wise member that all the screens at this size are bleh, but if any of you can recommend an alternative screen maker, you would make my life so much better. I hope I don't have to downgrade to xga though. It would be great if you have personal experience with the LCD you recommend and if you wear glasses, I think you will understand where I am coming from even more.

May we take it for granted, that your T40 is 15" model with IPS/Flexview screen, but your T60p is just a 14.1" machine without IPS/Flexview display?

That would definitely explain your bad impression.

EDIT: I overlooked that you mentioned the T60p model size as 14.1" already in the subject header. Also, since my theory that your T40 possibly had an IPS/Flexview screen is obviously wrong, i am left without any further ideas. Thanks to ajkula66 for making me aware about my misconception.

There were no T40/41/p models with 15" LCDs, everything prior to T42/p was 14" in T4x range...

And yes, the T60p in question is a 14" SXGA+ unit....

I am trying to see if I can find out what LCD my old T41 had, but I just have the product info, not the serial. Sucks because I have the frus of almost all the other parts in that system, including the LCD cable. Bummer...

*Edit* According to thinkwiki, it was either the samsung or the id-tech for the 14.1 T41 (it was not the T40 as I had previously thought). I am not sure if that is true. The id-tech, as far as I know, can not be modded into a T60. I hear that with a little eeprom magic I can get the samsung from a t40 to work on a T60. Is that something worth doing? Anyone try the LTN141P4-L02 before and liked it?

Your laptop had a 14.1" SXGA+, made by either IDTech or Samsung.
T41 (2373-5U2)
Based 2373-3HU: P M 1.6GHz, 512MB RAM, 40GB 5400rpm HDD, 14.1 SXGA+(1400X1050) TFT LCD, 32MB ATI Radeon 9000, 16x10x24x/8x CD-RW/DVD, Intel 802.11b wireless, Modem, 1GB Ether, UltraNav, Sec Chip, 6c Li-Ion, WinXP Pro

Don't know if XGA and SXGA+ require an EDID chip.
In the T60 they use the same LCD cable for XGA and SXGA+.
This SXGA+ LCD from Toshiba/TMD LTD141EN9B (FRU 13N7063, also FRU 42T0373) from a T61 will also work.

All T60/p screens call for an EDID in order to pass the BIOS whitelist.

Current LCD is Toshiba (TMD).

I guess when all is said and done, my only question is does anyone have personal experience with the LTN141P4-L02? I think that is pretty much one of my only options if I want to stay hires and away from an 15in IPS. Ironically, I made a conscious decision not to bid on this dream machine here: http://www.ebay.com/itm/ws/eBayISAPI.dl ... NA:US:1123. I really want a lightweight system....

Also, thanks to ajkula66 for being alway helpful and to the other posters on this thread for trying your best to help me. Always appreciated.

I think I might possibly have that display. I have T61p 14" display, SXGA+ TFT. It is not a good screen at all. I need black and white contrast to read things properly. Light grey text on a light blue background is impossible to read. But that is what I have, the machine is in warranty until next April or May, it shows no signs of dying, and I would like to try Windows 8 on a new machine. So I am not rushing. ... JDH

Which display? The samsung or the tmd? This link is the quickest way to find out http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/product ... ookup.page

Please let me know, because it sounds like you are describing my same screen!

Your 'dream machine' on eBay was a 15.4" widescreen machine, way too big for your liking...
Also, it did not have an IPS screen, contrary to what seller reported!

Yup about the weight of the system. As for the IPS thing, I did not check because I had no intention of bidding. Is it because there are no widescreen IPS screens? I say dream machine because it has an ssd and the whole shebang, but if it is not an IPS machine, than bleh. Like I said in my first post, my dream machine is right in front of me, lol, but with the wrong screen. I feel bad for the person who bought the machine with the description being incorrect.

My screen is a 42T0432, so it is not yours exactly. But it remain a "blah" screen. I have used it for nearly 4 years, so it is indeed usable and does not strain my eyes. ... JDH

Blah over pain..I will totally take that... Now I have to figure out if the headache of getting a T40 version of the panel will be worth the $40-50 it will save me. I am still trying to figure out if the eeprom can be programmed with the lcd installed in the laptop (by using an external monitor etc) or if a interface cable has to be made/bought. I don't want to pop a fuse. I am going to skim through a couple of threads to find the answer, but if any of you know offhand, that would be awesome.

*Edit* There is a thread that says that there is no EDID chip on the T40 version of the LTN141P4-L02. Is that true?

Most of the early T4x series LCDs don't have the chip. Some of the very late T42/p and T43/p units had screens that would be compatible with T6x series, but that's a hit-or-miss situation. Likely manufacturer of these panels would likely be Hydis in my experience.

I think that just about sums it up for me. I guess I need to get the T60 version.

Anything coming from a 14" R60 will do as well.

Good luck.
