It really depends on what you're doing, but you didn't say anything about that, which makes it hard to say.

The first 3.0GHz P4 came out in mid '03 as I recall... so not quite ten years old!

As ZaZ says, it really depends on your usage pattern. An 865-based Northwood P4 system equipped with a zippy SSD or 10KRPM hard drive might feel faster to you than a T61 with a 7200rpm hard drive...

how much faster would depend on what CPU/GPU you get the T61 with.

but the T61 will be better than what you have, now that's for sure.

duke1, I remember you from about half a year ago when you were looking for a cheap-but-good Thinkpad. How come you still haven't bought one?

Like others have said both in this thread and in the numerous threads you started half a year back, you need to give us a lot more info about your usage pattern, needs, and the specifications of your current desktop. You did tell us your budget, which was really low if I remember correctly, something like $150. Is it still that low? If it is and if you don't need mobility, I would suggest sticking with your desktop for another year or so to give you time to save up more money.

I agree, but we still don't know what duke1 uses the computer for. For basic tasks, the T61 wouldn't feel much faster than his 3GHz Pentium 4 desktop, and considering that he has such a limited budget, I think it would be a waste of money. Again, I don't think we can offer much more help until he gives us more info.
