Now sorted 12/29/11- Keyboard issue, new T61.

#1 Post by tenpointnine » Wed Dec 28, 2011 11:58 am

Just took delivery of 14.1" T61, which may be going back as ebay listing stated 15".
Machine is running Vista 32bit, and I have noticed that whan I type the letter "a", I get a dropdown box in the upper left corner, showing Undo, Cut, Copy, Paste, Delete and Select All.
Is this some kind of Hotkey / Keyboard Shortcut issue? Any suggestions, other than sent it back?

I haven't seen this keyboard issue, but it sounds to me like your keyboard is shorted and the keystroke is giving you a combination of "a" and "right click" at the same time, which is why your seeing the context menu.

I'll also add that the 14.1 widescreen model sells significantly less then the 15.4 widescreen, and there are no "15" models of the T61. If you have a 14.1 with 4:3 aspect ratio (non-widescreen), then they are desirable, and often sell at a premium, but only older models have the 4:3 ratio so if it has nVidia graphics, it would most likely have the less reliable GPU, so you could find yourself with a failed motherboard. Units with Intel graphics aren't effected.

Good used keyboards aren't hard to find for one of these. I usually get $20-30 depending on condition.

This T61 is 14.1 widescreen, with 1280 x 800, Intel (R) 965 Express, Bluetooth and fingerprint scanner, 2Gb RAM.
I have a spare keyboard at home which I will try later.
Thanks

Tried spare keyboard, but context menu drop-down box still appearing when I type the letter "a".
Perhaps this is all the more reason to send it back for a refund.

Would you be interested in an R61 (8933-AD5) with Intel graphics and 15.4" widescreen WSXGA+ (1680x1050)?
PM me if so.

No, thank you, RBS.

If I am to be lured away from my T60, it will be to a T61 (one that works!).

R61 is just a T61 in a different 'dress'. :D
And my R61 works!

When I switched off the T61 it downloaded 82 updates. On powering up it installed these updates and the keyboard problem has disappeared. Strange.

Now to decide, do I keep this 14.1" or go for a 15.4" which I thought I was buying?

Price was reasonable for UK, (would have been bargain if 15.4").
