Ubuntu 11.10 firegl v5200 on T60p issues

Hey all.
I've got a T60p w/ firegl mobility v5200.
the open source ati driver works except I get a ton of dots and lines on the screen, that after a while becomes unbearable
fglrx does NOT show up in the jockey in the proprietary driver list (probably because it appears ati stopped supporting the card in the driver), however if I install it via the terminal I get a clear display, and fairly good graphics response (once I disable sync to vblank and increase the refresh rate), however unity and compiz eventually act inconsistently, especially as I attempt to modify the settings in ccsm.
I'm not a hardcore graphics user, though I do enjoy the functionality of "scale", "expo", et al.
I have a feeling I'm close to having a super functional system, but sense that niether the xorg ati driver, or the fglrx driver have been configured properly.
The only other issues I have with the install is the volume buttons don't correspond to the system master volume. (As if the system volume is just a buss)
Anyone out there success for at running Ubuntu 11.10 on a t60p? Any tips towards resolving these issues? Thanks!
