ATI 14" T60p, dies w graphics test- what would you do?

I have a 15" T60p but it has it's issues, at least one serious -- long story, maybe another thread -- and I wanted to get something similar that I could rely on right now, so I just bought a 14" T60p.

It works and looks great, sort of. Nothing beats the Flexview, but I think I could even enjoy the 14's screen as it is also 4:3 and because when adjusted at a slight angle tilting away from me, the contrast gets a lot better and actually looks pretty good....if I keep it.

The new laptop works and looks great except for the fact that when running the graphics test, it shuts down completely to the boot screen. I've tried it about three times now, and it consistently does this with PC Doctor's wireframe demo test, when the machine's graphic's card starts to work harder. I haven't run the graphics test again because the last shutdown was a little scary as all of the lights went out (it ate the lights :) ) and it would not even respond to the power button press until I unplugged it and removed the battery.

I don't have the exact model number with me as the 14 is at home, but it has an ATI 256mb 5250 graphics chip and a T7400 2.16 processor. I don't remember the exact manufacturing date, but it is likely an earlier dated model.

I will post further details if needed and I guess more could also be said, but the bottom line is, I would like to keep it. The transaction between the seller and I was such that I believe if I asked for my money back, he would give it to me. (I paid 212) He also has a T60 non-P and I think I could exchange it for that and some cash back.

It's very busy at work and given that the window to possibly return the 14 is limited, I just didn't have the time I'd like to have had to have properly researched what my prospects likely are at this point.

The first thing I'd do if there's a decent chance at it being a keeper is see what kind of temps are happening, with light loads first, by installing the proper software. Then I would open it up and apply some arctic silver to the heatsink, as I've seen mentioned here. The 14 barely gets warm under the fan, whereas my 15 will literally burn my leg if I let it, so I'm thinking that would help regardless.

What do you guys think? Would you think it even worth taking apart to try and save, or would you just not even bother and return it?

I believe you have dust on your heatsink and you are hitting thermal overload. Heatsink cleaning and thermal paste of choice reapplication would seem to be the fix here.

The T60p burning your leg doesn't have to be that way. Mine (t7600) got very hot like that until I cleaned the heatsink, applied AS5, and then undervolted the CPU. Now my laptop runs longer on battery, and right now typing this message has a CPU temp of 46C.

Thanks for the quick reply, and it's also good to hear your success on the 15's heat. Apparently the T-series graphics chip issues I have read about are with nvidia and the T61, so with any luck, there isn't a chip issue with the T60p 14. Since I've been meaning to do a full cleaning of the 15 anyway, I'll get the thermal compound for them both, and work on the 14 first and hope that helps.

Sweet screen or not, the 15 really feels like a behemoth when compared to the 14. If I end up with the choice of carrying around a nicely functioning 14 or 15, all the better.

The 14" model is not IPS, but it would be SXGA+ (1400x1050).
The very fact that you have to twist the LCD to see better, is proof.
On an IPS screen you can look at it from any angle and have almost the same view/brightness everywhere.
If the 15" LCD is good, you could transfer the 14" motherboard into the 15" machine.
The 15" models also have better cooling than the 14" models.

just for reference here, i have a T60p i got (paid >$3000 for it) i got when they were released something like 6 years ago..
it has run fine for that time and recently had the display replaced under the extended on site warranty (now expired) which brought back the bright (it had faded over the years)..
i replaced the cpu with a quad core about 4 years ago..

i also have some other T60's and T61p's..

IMO the T60 series was one of the best..

Care to elaborate a bit more on that? I thought there were no quad core CPU's available on T60 platform...

I was thinking the same thing, but I suspect what Bill is saying is that he replaced the "System" with a quad core model.

I know I suffer from fingers that like to type words they are used to typing in place of the words my brain tells them to type... lol

But... if I'm wrong and you do know a way to stuff a Quad-core into a T-60... then do enlighten us :)
