Hibernate problem with wireless radio on T61p

#1 Post by billj32 » Sun Jan 15, 2012 12:00 am

Every time when my T61p comes out of hibernate, I must reboot to get the wireless radio back on. Any command to turn the wireless radio on does not work after the computer comes out of hibernate. It just stays off no matter what I do. However, restarting the computer always turns the wireless radio back on. Any ideas on how to fix the problem would be appreciated. It defeats the purpose of using the hibernate when I travel.

Check your power settings, make sure the wifi is set to run on battery power, because it sounds like it's being powered off by a power saving feature.

I can't really tell you anything specific because I don't even know what operating system you use (make a mental note to always provide details like that when asking for help, if you want accurate help). There are also many versions of power manager, both Lenovo and windows, and they tend to interact, and the bios has some settings too.

What I can tell you is I have had dozens of these units and don't have this problem, so I'd say it's a setting, old software version, or OS update that's required, but again this is just a guess.

Thanks for the reply. The T61p OS is Windows 7 Ultimate. Have checked power settings to see if anything stands out that could be causing the problem but have not found an answer as of yet.

I often use the T61 because it was the last Lenovo 14" screen with the 4:3 configuration. I like having as much vertical space as possible since I typically work with documents in portrait. I hate the 16:9 screen on my newest laptop which causes me to do continuously scrolling. Seems like the laptop manufacturers keep taking away vertical real estate. 4:3 to 16:10 to 16:9. Next it will be 2:1! Not everyone uses their laptops solely to watch movies. Some of us actually perform business tasks on them where we are looking at documents and other vertically oriented files through out the day.

Actually I think the 15.4 widescreen has about the same vertical screen size as your 14.1 with 4:3, it's just wider, but the fact that you have 4:3 tells me your system is older, have you updated the bios on it at any point?

Also update your power manager and make sure all your settings are on highest performance, turning off all options to power off devices. You can turn some of them back on later if you want, but it's best to disable it all to help with your diagnosis.

My best guess is something is making your system go into low power mode and it's powering off options. It might be as simple as a bios or software/driver update, or may be a problem with that model. I don't have a 4:3 T61p to compare, so can't tell you if it works or not. I can tell you it works on the 15.4 T61p.
