Moving a HDD from one machine to another

Hi,
I have a T60p 2623ddu that I've never upgraded because I'm leery of the new screens. I do *everything* on this machine, and take it everywhere, and if it gets lost or stolen or if it crumps, I need to be up and running again in minimum time.

I'm completely backed up, always, but of course if I were to buy, say, a new W520, I'd have to spend a week re-installing everything, time I wouldn't necessarily have. I'd also have to wait for the new unit to arrive.

I'd like to have another 2623ddu on the shelf, so I can put the old HDD into the new machine and be on my way, or if the old machine isn't available, restore to the new machine and be done.

Will this work? And if it will, does the replacement have to be exactly a 2623ddu? Would another type work?

Thanks for any insight.
/SD

I've done this, and even moved a disk from T60p to T61 without incident. If different models of T60p are so different (say in the video) as to be incompatible, I can't imagine you couldn't boot in VGA mode and then download the appropriate drivers. Ditto for the networking.

That's a small sample size, but I believe you'll have no problems. And to the same model, certainly OK.

If your OS is WinXP, it is fairly particular about what machines it will boot in. You probably would not have to have exactly the same model, but it would at least need to have the same system board too fool Windows into thinking it is the same machine.

BTW, just yesterday, I tried moving a HDD from my 15" R61 to a different 14" R61 and Vista would not boot. These two are very similar machines, but the system boards are different, and at least in my case, it did not work.

I've put my OS HDD from the laptop in my spec to another T61 with no BT, different wifi, different GPU, and different CPU, and it booted fine. Just the video driver is what I had to update to run stuff. This is on XP Pro 32bit

I remember moving a XP installed drive from a Gateway to a DIY system years ago, and think all I had to do was uninstall all the specific hardware in the OS before the swap. Booted up, and the OS detected the new hardware and installed the relevant drivers. It was from a Intel P3 to an Athlon64, too. I felt proud in pulling that off. ;)

Of course, a clean install is the best way to go, but I suspect it remains possible, albeit more tricky, with Vista. I'd bet the risk is almost non-existent with the same TP type-to-type, but again, the risk is that the hardware change might force you to re-authenticate your product key.

T60p-->another T60p should be easy.
T60p-->W520 possible but definite room for gotchas, first of which will be the W520 will come with the SATA controller set to AHCI mode which won't be supported on your XP image without some hacking...

Thank you to everyone. I'm running Win XP.
JeffCullen mentions that T60p to T60p should work fine. Of course, if I can find a nice type 2623ddu that would be great. I'd like to expand my search, though. Does anyone know, or how do I find out, what other type numbers of T60p have the same high-quality 1600x1200 screen of the 2623ddu?

I'm fairly sure the hardware maintenance manual will give some type numbers for the UXGA display machines.

For a start, here is a non exhaustive listing of T60p's which came with a UXGA display:

Code: Select all

That makes at least 345 possible T60p machine combinations that were featuring an UXGA screen. I have an almost complete listing of all T60's which were automatically retrieved from the Lenovo website by a nice script while it was still hosted on IBM. Unfortunately the script doesn't work anymore with the new Lenovo website, so i could never complete a full retrieval of all possible machine listings. As an example, the list entry for 2623-DDU looks like this:

Code: Select all

grep -h 2623-DDU T60p*
2623-DDU: T2500(2GHz), 1GB RAM, 100GB 7200rpm HD, 15in 1600x1200 LCD, 256MB ATI FireGL V5200, CDRW/DVDRW, Intel 802.11abg wireless, WWAN, Bluetooth/Modem, 1Gb Ethernet, UltraNav, Secure chip, Fingerprint reader, 9c Li-Ion batt, WinXP Pro
If you would like to, i can send you the complete parts list for these machines via PM.

Hi,

I purchased another T60p, of slightly different type: "2008-CF9, based on 2007-96U", that, as far as I can tell is the same as the 2623ddu except 2.16GHz processor speed and maybe something else minor. I bought this:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vi ... 060wt_1189
and very happy with the transaction and the quality of the device.

I took the HDD from my T60p and put it into this new unit. Got some message bubbles saying it identified some new hardware, new disk controller, etc., but after some bubbling around it just worked. Looked exactly like my other unit, connected to the network fine, etc. I only did about 15 minutes of checking, since I'm going to put it on the shelf right now, but everything I tried worked perfectly.

So now if my T60p crumps, I can just put my SSD HDD into the new unit, or if it gets stolen (as it almost did a couple weeks ago), I can restore my backup to the new unit, and I'm in business in one restore, rather than after three weeks of re-installing and configuring all the programs into a more modern device.

And I'll just wait for Lenovo to make better screens for the time being.

Thanks to everyone who posted.

I moved 500G HD with W7 from U160 to T61 and it booted right up, I needed to update just a couple of drivers. Later I tried the same with 80G SSD, also with W7 and no problems except updating couple of drivers. Even Windows update works (smile). I have to try it other way around with XP (smile)
