Just got a T60!
Just got a T60!
Yeah!
T5600, 2 GB RAM, 14" SXGA+, X1400, Windows XP SP3. Seems to be in perfect physical condition. Like the hardware and the form factor very much.
Question: The HD is newly formated and the drivers seem to be old. Figured out how to get a new mouse driver to get trackpad scrolling working in Firefox, but the other drivers are probably old as well. So should I get new ones or is all good as long as I don´t run into any problems?
(I´m new to PCs.)

Congratulations!
Your Thinkpad will run best if Thinkpad-specific drivers are loaded where applicable. One of the nicest pieces of software from IBM/Lenovo is "ThinkVantage System Update", which will find the drivers a Thinkpad needs and asks permission to install them. It is the most convenient way to update Thinkpad-specific drivers and software. Here it is -- install it and enjoy:

Re: Just got a T60!
That's a great tool but in my experience it doesn't find all the missing drivers (in this case it didn't install the Intel LAN driver).
Personally I'm a fan of installing the latest available drivers. To be sure I install the most important drivers like WLAN en video drivers manually.

I subscribe to the theory if it's working, why mess with it. Congrats on the T60. It's a fine machine.

Re: Just got a T60!
Thanks guys.
I downloaded and ran the System Update program, and installed a fair bit of the drivers it found. It fixed some graphic anomalies in the ThinkVantage apps and nothing seems to be broken, so I guess all is well.
Question: The harddrive is spinning all the time. A quiet whirr plus around 5 small tocs on average over a period of ten seconds. I would prefer if it settled down, but maybe it´s doing something useful? This happens even while the CPU is idling, when no program seem to do much. I set it to shut down after 3 minutes - didn´t change anything.
Edit: By the way, what can one expect of the fans in a T60? I would love if I could keep the fans completely silent when writing or doing light browsing, can this be achieved? Currently they spin up every now and then.

Re: Just got a T60!
When you say the harddrive makes "5 small tocs", do you mean the harddrive is making clicking noises? Hopefully that's not what you mean, since that's usually a sign that your harddrive is about to fail...
Re: Just got a T60!
No worries. I´m sure it´s not about to fail, it makes very normal hard drive sounds, of the kind most hard drives make if you write to or read from them.
