[solved] T61 XGA to SXGA+ screen replacement

#1 Post by groovee » Fri Feb 03, 2012 3:32 pm

Hello everyone (I'm new here :))!

I have Lenovo T61 (8898-6DG) laptop. I get this one with broken screen (LTN141XA-L01). I've replaced it with N141X7-L04 from my old T41. It works but only in 1024x768 resolution.

I've read on your forum that there is a possibility to replace this screen to SXGA+ (1400x1050) one.

I've found LTN141P4-L02 screen in good price.

As far as I know I should replace also LCD cable and it is very important becouse wrong cable could kill motherboard.

I've found in some specs that I should find FRU93P4511.

Am I right? could some of more experienced colleagues on bord check compatibility of LCD and cable I've mentioned with my PC?

Should I also replace inverter?

I know, it is old machine but I like old ThinkPads and I don't want to loose it :)

Regards,
Kacper

If you want the ultimate upgrade, consider swapping all the components into a T60/T60p 15" with IPS flexview screen. It's not extremely difficult and you'd end up with a much better screen. Neither the xga or sxga+ options for the t61 are anywhere near as nice.

Welcome to the forum.

Older panels (pre-T60), didn't include or rely on EDID information to setup display resolution --> http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Extended_d ... ation_data

You need a panel with the EDID chip and older T4x panels did not have that chip.

You can use any Lenovo 14" T60/R60/T61 SXGA+ panel in your T61 and it will work. You do not have to swap the cable or inverter, both will work perfectly with any resolution LCD.

Indeed, the T61 can take up to 8GB of RAM and fast processors, it's a nice model.

Thank you for replies.

According to table at:
http://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/TFT_display

screen LTN141P4-L02 was mounted in T40 - T61.
The one I'm going to buy is taken from T41.
Does it mean that there could be models of LTN141P4-L02 from older thinkpads and it is not the same as LTN141P4-L02 dedicated for T61?

Regarding to cables - I've found in lenovo specs here:
http://support.lenovo.com/pl_PL/product ... D=PD008764

that LCD cable for SXGA+ is FRU: 93P4511. In my T61 there is 93P4335 cable inside.
I'm not sure it is the same, looking for some docs.

Inverters are really the same - FRU 41W1478

@TuuS:
I have a 14,1" 4:3 screen - as far as I know there were no IPS/flexview screens smaller than 15" wide?

Kacper

Unless the "new" screen has a proper EDID which it likely doesn't, it won't boot in a T6x machine at all. It could also blow a fuse on the board in the process.

What TuuS was referring to was dropping the board from your current machine into a 15" T60/p shell with a FlexView screen and creating a FrankenPad...

Hmmm....
An FrankenPad? Interesting :)

Should I look for any 15" 4:3 T60/T60p laptop with IPS screen, or there is more things to check?

UPDATE:

Until I find good base for FrankenPad, I would like to try SXGA+ option.
I've found one in my garage :) an 14,1" FRU 42T0369 - it is exactly what I need, isn't it?
The one I have is with broken backlight. Could I simply try to replace CCFL lamp from 14,1 LCD from older thinkpad?
I know operation is risky but for the moment it is costless for me so why do not try?
Only what I'm afraid is to broke motherboard or inverter.

Kacper

I'm already on SXGA+ resolution.
No inverter or cable replacement was needed, as You suggesed.
Original LCD I've found was unfortunatelly cracked but according to some Polish board, I've bought LTN141P4-L05 LCD.
It was necessary to cut off an inverter plug and install old one.
I've booted PC on the cracked but original SXGA+ LCD, using phoenix I've downloaded EDID information, hot-swapped LCD (without the bulb) to -L05 one and uploaded EDID information with powerstrip. After reboot it started to operate well. I've spent less than 30$ and a few moments of fear for all :)

Regards, Kacper
