I am brand new to this form. I am ready to tear my hair out. I have had my Lenovo for about 4 years.... no problems. All of a sudden I can't install my Epson printer Workforce 610..... when I boot the message I get is "Intel R ICH8 Family USB host controller 2830...etc (I have 7) has not passed windows logo testing to verify its compatability with Windows xp".
Also, "there is a problem installing the USB controller...an error occurred during installation of this device. The driver cannot be installed because it is either not digitally signed or not signed in the appropriate manner. Contact your hardware vendor"
In all the years using this computer I had never gotten this message. I have called Microsoft, Epson and Lenovo.... I know that there is a real issue with the windows drivers.... but why did this happen and how can I fix it? I have downloaded the most recent windows xp sp3, updated lenovo system files. deleted all of my printers, reinstalled the printer drivers from the epson website. BTW The printer had worked for years.... it just died and epson sent me a new one.
I tried the workaround on your form.... --- i uninstalled all of my USB ports under Device manager (again). Upon boot up I reinstalled all of the USB stuff...directing it to c:\windows\lnf. I did get my wireless microsoft mouse to work, but I still can't get the printer to work.
What is going on and why can't LEnovo/windows xp automatically reinstall the uninstalled drivers?
Lenovo T61... win xp problem with USB ports....
Re: Lenovo T61... win xp problem with USB ports....
Two thoughts.
The setup you are using (or part of it) for the printer may be old in relation to your present system. Updates to the OS may cause the driver installation package to fail a USB check. Look for a utility named sone thing like "usbready.exe" and see how old it is. Rename or delete such a file before finishing install.

If this printer was installed before, who knows how many "ghost" copies you might have.

Re: Lenovo T61... win xp problem with USB ports....
Just curious, but have you changed your system time/date for any reason?
I ran into a similar problem when my harddrive was inserted in a completely identical system that was set on the wrong date and I installed some external devices, then when it was put in a machine with the correct date, I got digital signature errors on drivers. It wasn't easy to track down, but I suspect if your install date predates the digital signature date due to system clock error, it will hopelessly screw up the system.
Don't you just love microsoft?
A reformat fixed my problem.
