T61 ***nVidia*** safe temperature

#1 Post by hoax32 » Sat Feb 18, 2012 8:13 pm

Hi all!
I want to know, what is a good temperature for a idling and stressed NVS 140m? (or a T61p GPU)
I run TP fan controll all the time!
Always on MAX! (noise doesnt bother me)
On idle my GPU is at 49 degrees and under extreamly heavy load for over 1 hour, it's between 72 and 76 degrees.
In very - VERY rare occasions it reaches 80 degrees. (on carpet, blanket, hot day,...)
CPU temps are 36 degrees idle and between 50-60 in games and h.264 playback.

What are your T61 / T61p temps?

1 more questions:
What temperature is required to damage the nVidia Chip?
My T61 is a August 2008 unit. (08/08)

I have a 14.1" T61P, 8890-W95

Intel T7700 with the Nvidia FX570M

I'm currently idling right now @ 43c
Max out around 78-80c

I run TPF on BIOS mode until I start playing skyrim.

When I bought my thinkpad though, it used to idle right around 50c mark and max out around the 83-85c mark. Replacing the TIM compound on my CPU and GPU has helped somewhat.

I remember read somewhere that the threshold is 120c, but that seems a bit high to me.

if your FX idles at 43 deg C with the BIOS fan mode then your room must be kinda chilly.

at room temps mine idles at about 50 deg C, and at max it goes to about 76 deg C. The last is with the fan running on max with TPFanControl and the chip at 55% overclock, while at idle the fan is running on minimum speed

IMO, any part in the laptop that reaches 80 deg C and up needs improvement. The 90 deg mark is pretty much red zone right there.

note that I had to increase the GPU sensor reading of TPFanControl with 3 deg C to match various other programs that read GPU temps.

so at what temperature does the chip / chip-layers become loose?

You're right. I live in the Northern Midwest and I had the window open when I made that post. I'm in my living room right now which is 70f and I'm idling at exactly 53c.

I've cleaned out the fan and vents as well and replaced the TIM with IC7 compound. I used the pea method. In terms of improvement, I don't know what else to do. It's never hit over the 85c mark, but I have had to shut down my system a couple times in the past in fear of an overheat.

This is from constant heating and cooling of the GPU over time. If you have the A2 revision of the GPU, you should be ok.

My T61 with the Quadro 140M has the following temps, after upgrading to the T9300 processor:

Idle:
  • CPU: 49/47 degrees
  • GPU: 52 degrees
After gaming (1/2 hour w/Doom 3):
  • CPU: 56/54 degrees
  • GPU: 66 degrees
Core one always runs about 2-3 degrees hotter than core two. I haven't seen the GPU go over 66 degrees yet.
Experiments often have unintended consequences
