Please advise which fan for T60
Please advise which fan for T60
I have to replace the fan in a 14" T60 but i can't tell which fan is the right one. The model numrber is 2008VRQ and Lenovo site says the computer is this:
ThinkPad T60 (2008-VRQ)
Based 2008-CTO: T2400(1.83GHz), 1GB RAM, 100GB 7200 HD, 14.1in 1400x1050 LCD,
128 MB ATI Radeon X1400, CDRQ/DVDRW, Intel 802.11abg wireless, Bluetooth/Modem,
1GB Ether, UltraNav,Sec Chip, FPR, 6c Li-Ion batt, WinXP Pro
But the Lenovo site shows two different fan assemblies for 2008-CTO: 41V9931 and 41W6406
Please can someone tell me which fan is right for this machine? Bonus would be to know the best place to purchase - Lenovo seem to sell only the complete fan assembly. Ideally, I'd like to replace the fan only, but will do the whole assembly shebang if that's best.
In either case I'll replace the thermal paste; is there anything else essential/worthwhile to do while it's on the bench?
The present fan is making buzzing noises (I've tried canned air blowout, but still the same noise), and the machine shuts off when streaming netflix, so i'm hoping a fan replacement will make it better.
Btw probably not relevant, we got the machine used with a wiped HD, so i've put Win7 Home on it instead of XP; Win7 runs very nicely.
thanks!
Alan

I'm guessing eBay would be the cheapest place to get one.anadem wrote:Bonus would be to know the best place to purchase

Re: Please advise which fan for T60
Well, I'll share what I did when I needed a new fan for my T60P. Even though I knew that I could buy a very inexpensive fan on eBay, or pay a premium to get one from IBM/Lenovo, I bought one from this firm in California, at a price halfway between that of eBay and IBM/Lenovo:
THERMALFX.com, INC
@ 805-499-5300
For my machine (with the discrete GPU) I purchased a 41V9932 that was rebuilt, using unusually high grade lubricants, and my "new fan" has been exceptionally quiet and smooth. The gentleman with whom I spoke was very knowledgeable, very friendly, and even offered a warranty.
If you're looking for the lowest price, then eBay is the place, but I didn't mind paying more for a measure of peace of mind, and what has turned out to be a very good part.
At any rate, a good fan is one of your computer's best friends.
Good luck.

@ Alan:
Welcome to the forum!
I suggest you see the thread Fan type T60 2007-BF3 and in particular this post and the links mentioned there. Your T60 has the same motherboard as the 2007-BF3, so you can use the same fans - I suggest the 41W6407.

Re: Please advise which fan for T60
Please note that my post was a suggestion about where you might want to buy...not which fan version to buy. That's why I mentioned that the version I bought was for the T60P with the discrete GPU, as opposed to the T60.
According to many posters the fan Johan mentioned may be more robust than the version I bought (and may indeed have been usable even with the P model).

Re: Please advise which fan for T60
anadem - Due to the MB having an ATI Radeon X1400 GPU, the Thermal device and fan (Discrete) will be either FRU: 41V9932 or 41W6407 and to confirm which, you will need to remove to check - The Fan for FRU: 41V9932 is MCF 210-PAM05 Lenovo P/N 26R9434 and for 41W6407 is MCF 211-PAM05 Lenovo P/N 41W6403.
If the fan in question is noisy & rattling, you could try lubricating it as per > T60 T61 fan lubrication - illustrated guide by msb0b inside
Yesterday I finally got around to change over my very tired rattly 6 year old T60p fan only - as the grinding noise which started a month ago was starting to get to me
- The newly installed fan works much more smoothly and is very quiet compared the original when new and does not seem have any high pitch pulsing sounds.
It was bought from an ebay seller: IBM LENOVO ThinkPad T60 T60P CPU FAN 41V9932 26R9434 - and will be interesting to see the longevity of this fan before it goes bad etc

Re: Please advise which fan for T60
I should add that when I was looking for fans, I noticed that most available fans were aftermarket. I made a decision to get an IBM fan, but found that the new part from IBM/Lenovo was expensive.
When I found the rebuilt IBM fan from the vendor noted previously, which is rebuilt to high standards, I was happy. I have about four months on my new fan, and it is extremely quiet, and vibration free. And, as I mentioned before, the vendor offers a warranty, and has a good reputation.
