T60 with external 1080p ASUS monitor w/ aspect ratio issue.

Hey all, I gave my girlfriend an external monitor recently and she has a ThinkPad T60 (2008-VEP). Although the monitor has HDMI and DVI, besides VGA, the T60 only has VGA, so I hooked it up that way.
The problem is not getting the video signal over to the monitor. It's the aspect ratio that I can't get it to work. The T60's native res. is 1400x1050 (4:3 aspect ratio), and the monitor's is 1920x1080 (16:9). The video adapter inside that T60 is the ATI Radeon X1400 w/ 128MB of dedicated graphics memory. I can't seem to get it right. The picture is always stretched.
I think it's a driver issue, but Windows 7 (32-bit), which is installed on her T60, says there is no better driver that "it knows of". Am I correct in my assumptions so far? Will the X1400 video card drive the 1080p display? Do I need to install the ATI Catalyst Control Center in order to get this to work correctly?
Thanks a ton! It's always great to come back here to visit.
