T60 screen brightness

#1 Post by retired » Tue Mar 06, 2012 6:27 pm

My T60 screen, in the last 2 days has developed a quirk. Twice now I've walked away from it for a few minutes and had the screen go quite dark, barely able to see any writing. I had to reboot and then it was back to normal. This isn't related to suspend or sleep. Otherwise the screen is fine, no spots or dead pixels, uniform brightness etc. If something is going bad, any ideas what to check ?

Very likely the CCFL (cold cathode fluorescent lamp) is on it's way out. You may be able to delay it's demise by turning the brightness down a little, but it will eventual stop working completely no matter whether you reboot or what. The fix is a new LCD panel or complete lid. Or, if you are very ambitious about repairs you might be able to replace the lamp yourself. I've replaced a few...never 100% happy with the results...and destroyed more panels than I fixed.
