Vertical black bar after replacing backlight

#1 Post by Jay K » Thu Mar 08, 2012 9:48 pm

Hi everyone.

I'm the new guy here.
So I tried to replace the backlight on my T60p cause it was dim and yellowish (LG SXGA IPS). I thought it was going well until halfway through I noticed I forgot to remove battery. When I put it all back together and turned it on now I got a 2 inch wide vertical black bar on the right side of the screen. I rechecked the connectors on the back panel, but still no luck.
Does this mean I ruined the panel?! Has anyone here replaced there own backlight?, have any thoughts or ideas?
Or maybe I should start looking for a replacment. Can you even buy these new anymore? or just used ones?

Any help/comments would be appreciated.

JK

Welcome to the forum.
The vertical white bar is due to bad column drivers (they control the vertical 'lines') on an LCD.
By your not removing power/battery, some parts of the LCD may have been shorted when you disconnected it.
Another, more likely possibility, is your putting undue pressure on the top edge of the LCD, where you now find the white bar.
Either way, unless you are an electronics engineer with a scope, that LCD is busted.
Most people either send it in for a professional repair, or buy a replacement LCD or even a complete lid.
It being a T60, it is imperative that you buy an IBM/Lenovo LCD, and not one of those "guaranteed 100% compatible", they are not.
Ask in our Marketplace forum or check on eBay.

I have done several CCFL replacements, but I only do them on a few select LCD makes/models (IDTech and TMD).
I will refuse any Samsung, Hitachi or LG. Never had a chance yet at a BoeHydis.

Ya I thought it may be garbage now. I also read online that if you unplug/plug panel with battery still in, it can short out.
Too bad - cause the other 80% of the screen looks great with the new backlight. Much whiter and brighter.

So now Im unsure what to do. I see on ebay they have some refurbished LG - LP150E05 (A2)(K1), (I asked and they are supposed to be genuine IPS).
But if these old panels have old backlights in them, and look dim and yellowy - I'll be right back where I started. Should i risk another panel and try again with battery removed this time!?
A new panel would be the way to go but are there any available anymore?

Thanks for your input RealBlackStuff. Seeings how you would'nt replace a backlight on an LG, then I guess I should'nt either.
