Hello people. I received my T61 not too long ago and it's great but one thing is bugging me. It has some sort of dirt behind the screen and I don't know how to get rid of it. I'd greatly appreciate it if someone helped me out. Image

The dust specs are stuck between the LCD layers and there's no way of removing them. Attempting to do so will result in damaged or destroyed panel.

The choices, unfortunately, are the obvious ones: learning to live with the given imperfection or replacing the LCD.

My guess is someone replaced the backlight. To do that properly you need a clean-room, totally dust free. The plastic layers attract dust so you'll probably make it worse... if it works at all after attempting to clean it out.

As far as replacing the screen, I have some very reasonably priced screens, but shipping to uk would add a good bit to the cost, so if you want a new screen you might want to see what's available locally.

Disassembling an LCD panel requires a couple orders of magnitude higher skills than opening up a computer to install parts. If you don't have extensive experience you'll most likely destroy the panel.
Even if you are able to take it apart without damaging it, as already said you may very well end up introducing more dust between the layers, unless done in a clean room.

Looks like I'll just have to deal with it. Thanks for the help.

Depending on the screen construction, you may not need to take the layers apart.
My favorite CCFL-replacement LCD (15" IDTECH UXGA) allows me to remove the silicone stoppers at each end, then unsolder one wire on one end, and slide the CCFL itself out at the other end. No taking layers apart. No dust!

I've got the same issue and since I've disassembled already a s-IPS screen I have some idea how to clean and put back the layers, without leaving any traces. I'm planning to experiment on this when i beat up my laziness , and prepare myself for this operation since it's quite sensitive.

I think the chances of you succeeding are quite slim. I still wish you luck, as I've had the dust problem with almost all my thinkpads. :S S-IPS and normal LCD.
