Help with replacing fan on T60 2007-C4U

Hello there,

I've decided to keep my old Thinkpad for a little while longer and invest in a new fan or fan assembly since the things has started to buzz and is likely on its way out. Everything else is still pretty ok and it does what I need it for.

I've done some research and it appears that 41V9932 is the right part. There are two versions of this however since this is the "discrete" version (I suppose). You can get the entire heat sink assembly or just the fan itself.

I checked with IBM and there is a good chance they'll sell you a used one. I have a used one already ;-)
Same with "thinkpad-parts.com". I asked and for $40 you get used.

Hence the thought to just get a compatible new fan and put it in the existing assembly.

The maintenance manual (http://download.lenovo.com/ibmdl/pub/pc ... 844_04.pdf)
doesn't say anything about that. Has anyone done this? Am I on the right track? Or can anyone recommend a source for a original new parts?

If the fan only option works how hard is that to put in? Does that require soldering? How are fan and heat sink assembly connected?

Thanks

Your T60 has the following (stock) configuration:
ThinkPad T60 (2007-C4U)
T2500(2GHz), 512MB RAM, 80GB 5400rpm HD, 14.1in 1400x1050, 64MB ATI Radeon X1300, CDRW/DVDRW, Intel 802.11abg wireless, Bluetooth/Modem, 1Gb Ethernet, UltraNav, Secure chip, Fingerprint reader, 6c Li-Ion batt, WinXP Pro

... in other words it has the discrete X1300 GPU. I'd suggets you see the thread Fan for T60 2007-CTO V3B and in particular this post. As you will see, the suggestion there is to get the 41W6407 rather than the 41V9932. Be sure to get a brand new, original Lenovo fan, and not some "refurbished" or "re-manufactured" thing. Buying it as an original spare part from IBM Maintenance parts will get you a new part, I am certain, although eBay is far cheaper. On eBay, however, many sellers advertise T60 fans as "41W6407 41V9932" but as you will see from the images in the above-mentioned thread, the two fans 41W6407 and 41V9932 are not identical, although being specified for the same ThinkPad's. Therefore, if buying on eBay, make sure to get the fan you want, by carefully checking the images!

A yet cheaper option is (as you mention yourself) suggested in the thread LF: Fans for T61p, T60p, and T60 simply replacing the fan only, and re-using the heatsink/heat-pipe system. This solution is however more for the experienced user...

Fan replacement does not involve any soldering. Try Google after "T60 fan replacement youtube" and see what comes up. Also, I suggest you Google after "T60 fan replacement site:forum.thinkpads.com" and all you need to know will immediately surface!

PS: If you want to further quiet down your T60 (fan), see the threads How thick is the gap between GPU & heatsink? and New methods to reduce the fan noise in a T60 or in a T60p.

Hi, if you would like a New and Genuine I.B.M./Lenovo entire fan/heatsink assembly 41W6407 for less than prices you quoted above and without taking chances on Ebay send me an email. See signature below.

Have a great day,
Daniel.

For what it's worth, I just picked up a used T60 with a buzzing fan and decided to put a dab of 3in1 oil and lithium grease on the rod.

Don't know how long it will last, but it's been quiet the last few days.
