It has been always a bit dark ish. I had to use my laptop at my work for few days were I found out this. It gets dark after few hours of use. It doesn't seem to matter is background light lit or not. As long as laptop has been on like 4 or more hours, right side gets very dark. Dark area is about an inch wide and all the way high. Rest of the screen is okay. Is this a sign of worn out lcd panel? I had T20 with screen that had dark bottom area all day long even with new ccfl and this sounds too same..

15.4" 1680x1050.

Sounds rather like a bad CCFL.

Is there a sudden transition between the light and dark area, or does it fade into dark?

It fades to the dark, but quickly. At win7 time and date are at dark area and keyboard language selection isn't.

Ok. We shall see what's going to happen. There is no pink etc colours(yet) at boot up so it can take awhile.

You don't need to see pink if the CCFL is broken, but still functioning for a short period (while cool).
I've seen it all.

I buy either from http://www.ccflwarehouse.com/fibabylcdpa.html or from http://www.lcdparts.net/CCFL.aspx
I've never done a 15.4", so email them first to make sure.
I posted in the FAQ forum on CCFL replacement, may help you.
