Which computer do I have?

#1 Post by mpuchtel » Sat Apr 21, 2012 8:54 am

I recently bought a T61 refurbished online, but I'm having difficultly verifying that it is indeed a T61 versus a T60. All of the specs are accurate (processor speed and RAM) but the little label in the lower right corner of the screen portion of the laptop says, "T6-" and the rest is cut off by the silver laptop hinge. Is there another way I can confirm the model number? The product ID on the bottom of the laptop says: 7661ZCM. Is that indicative of he T61? Thanks, Max

Welcome to the forum.

That's a 14" widescreen T61.

No widescreen 14" T60s were ever built.

Thanks. I just measured the "screen" and it's 14in. However, the sales website says I should have gotten a 15.4" screen: http://www.thinkpaddepot.com/Product/33 ... 22ghz.aspx

Should I complain?

This is usually all information you need to check the product details at the Lenovo website. According to support.lenovo.com/en_US ("Use Quick Path"), the 7661-ZCM originally had these specs at time of delivery:

Code: Select all

ThinkPad T61 (7661-ZCM)
Based on 7661-CTO: T7500(2.2GHz), 3GB RAM, 160GB 7200rpm HD, 14.1in 1280x800
LCD, Intel X3100, CDRW/DVDRW, Intel 802.11agn wireless, Bluetooth, Modem, 1Gb
Ethernet, UltraNav, Secure chip, Fingerprint reader, 6c Li-Ion, WinVista Business 32
Unless this T61 has been modified in some way by its former owner, this is what you should have. Apart of the abysmal (IMHO) screen resolution, this machine has very nice specs. Looks like a definite keeper, although i would rather prefer to replace the display with a 1440x900 resolution LCD as a bare minimum. But then again i am just an old fart with heavy resistence to change to inferior modern specs at the loss of superior older features. ;)

You might also want to verify if the Product-ID actually matches the one displayed in the BIOS setup entry screen. And while you are at it, you could use the actual serial number of the unit shown in this very BIOS information, to check the list of built in components on either www-947.ibm.com/support/entry/portal/parts or the actuall Lenovo site support.lenovo.com/en_US/product-and-parts/partsLookup.page. The Lenovo hosted support website sometimes doesn't properly work and therefore it is nice to still have the IBM fallback. I usually use directly the IBM hosted services, as i noted a few times that the IBM website had machine information which were not available from the Lenovo support site.

Is this what you have:

ThinkPad T61 (7661-ZCM)
Based on 7661-CTO: T7500(2.2GHz), 3GB RAM, 160GB 7200rpm HD, 14.1in 1280x800 LCD, Intel X3100, CDRW/DVDRW, Intel 802.11agn wireless, Bluetooth, Modem, 1Gb Ethernet, UltraNav, Secure chip, Fingerprint reader, 6c Li-Ion, WinVista Business 32

Their website sports some horrendous mistakes and I wouldn't buy a screw from them, but that's me. The link is for an entirely different unit, and incorrect at that...

If you're happy with what you've received, just use it and enjoy it...

The mentioned www.thinkpaddepot.com/Product/339-ibm-t ... 22ghz.aspx refers to a "766513U", which according to support.lenovo.com/en_US ("Use Quick Path") has the following specs:

Code: Select all

ThinkPad T61 (7665-13U)
T7500(2.2GHz), 1GB RAM, 120GB 5400rpm HD, 14.1in 1440x900 LCD, 128MB nVIDIA
Quadro NVS 140M, CDRW/DVDRW, Intel 802.11agn(n-disabled), Bluetooth, Modem,
1Gb Ethernet, UltraNav, Secure chip, Fingerprint reader, 6c Li-Ion, WinVista Business
while the actual machine you have been delivered has different specs, as cited in my former reply.

In summary. the advertised machine has a (potentially faulty) nVIDIA GPU and a much better screen resolution, an inferior HDD (bott RPM and storage volume), significantly less RAM. and an inferior W-LAN module, but equal CPU. Given the infamous nVIDIA GPU, which depending on it's production date might sooner or later irreparably fail some day, i'd definitely prefer what you have actually been delivered. It is much more worth for the money in the long run, and a much better basis for future upgrades.

I called the company back and complained about the screen size. They offered to give me $45 back and I took it. Happy!

As stated, I think you are better off with the Intel X3100 over a machine with the Nvidia GPU.

Gratz on getting some cash back though.
