Hi All,
Long time lurker and more recently new owner of a Thinkpad T60.
For work, I’ve had a few IBM Think Pads and currently a Lenovo Think Pad T420.
I needed a second notebook for home and found an ex-lease refurbished T60 for A$140.
It was the 1951-BT2 model with a very basic T2400 processor, 60GB hard drive, integrated graphics and 1 GB of RAM and XP, with a good 9 cell battery
These machines are very well built and upgrading & tweaking is a breeze.
With all the good advice here on the forum and a few sound second hand parts – I could upgrade:
- Core 2 Duo T7200 (straight in)
- Newer 320 GB 7,200 rpm hard drive (don’t need to spend $$$ for a SSD)
- 2 x 2GB of RAM
- Bios update
If anyone is thinking about a solid, dependable notebook for everyday use - you could do a lot worse than the T6x!

This is true.
I owned a T60 for a while and I loved it.
I now have a T61 which I love as well.
I have owned many Thinkpads over the years (see sig) and the only other one I found as reliable is my T43.

My R60e, which would be similar to your T60, while not a top performer any longer, still runs great for every day. I'd disagree on the SSD. That more than anything else will make the biggest noticeable performance difference. If you want it to really fly, run Linux.

I agree with ZaZ, the biggest shortfalling of the T60 series is the 3gb ram limit, so when you use all 3gb of ram, your system is forced to use virtual memory. If you have an ssd instaled, even a small one as a primary drive, your virtual memory will be much faster. The end result is a huge increase in performance. A small drive will do, then stick your old drive in an ultrabay adapter and use it there for storage.

Can I simply swap out my T5500 CPU in my 1953CTO T60 with a T5600? Or my T2400 core duo in my 2623D6U T60?
