Just bought a T61 7661-CH8 for parts.
The seller said it that POST was ok, TPM and BIOS were cleared etc.
Just got it to find it will not POST, Im using a T60P OEM power supply from an 8744-C9U but afaik that should be ok.
Can anyone confirm I should be seeing POSt with this PSU "if board is functional"?

Yes, any T60 AC adapter, whether 65 watt or 90 watt, will work on any T61.

Remove all RAM and try to boot. If there is any life left in the mobo, it should beep 1-3-3-1.
If not, you'll need a new mobo.
Just in case: that's a 14.1" widescreen T61, not suited for a T601 Frankie...

Thanks folks, all I was looking to do was transplant ram, drives etc to get something useful for a while. I sent about 4 messages enquiring about post, etc etc and every time seller confirmed all worked before dismantling.
Ive transplanted the keyboard from my T60P 42T3233 but afaik that should work too regards general comapatability and power button etc.
All parts transplanted are in full working order.

The keyboard is fine.
Just return the T61 and don't waste any more time on this...

Sorry to waste folks time.
I took the base off to test fuses and what a surprise (not). Just sent the following in ebay messaging :
Hi. While testing fuses Ive inspected the underside of the motherboard. The area under the expansion card slots has extensive water AND burnout damage arising from short circuiting of components due to water damage while powered, meaning it did not simply occur in transit, there is no possible way this was a working board at time of sale. Additionally, the fly lead to the corner USB daughterboard has had a failed repair to where the wires were soldered onto it and attempted to be reinforced with silicone, I found them completely detached however alone that wouldnt have concerned me. I have taken pictures recording the damage. I know you advertised this for parts, however you specifically confirmed it worked in a number of communications, I bid on those assurances, Im going to have to ask for a full refund, plus additional return postage costs if you want the item sent back as I do not intend to be left out of pocket on this matter.
I hope you will comply and resolve this matter amicably as it would be a pity for me to have to open a dispute.
Please respond ASAP, Im now left without parts to complete an urgent repair to a laptop and I can only wait a very limited amount of time before taking further action.
Turns out hes not received cleared payment, and wont, because paypal seem to have selected him as one of their users theyre going to inflict their "no positive feedback, no clearing of payment from escrow" members.

I wonder why. Should hopefully make it easier to recover my payment, although I have utterly no confidence on where they side resolving disputes, in my experience its about as certain as flipping a coin.
Anyone got a mobo for a 7661-CH8 going cheap in the UK?

I thought I was lucky too as I "think" this was a Penryn capable model, seems it originated in Singapore, which is where I wish I was still living instead of having come back to the UK! Peole are generally more honest there

Turns out its less than a year out of its 3 year warranty too

I am finding this very hard to understand.
Got a replacement 42w7866 motherboard, guaranteed working from another seller with large 100% good feedback.
Every other part in the system is known working.
Still no power indication and no boot!
Power is reaching the motherboard, tested that.

If everything works, except the LEDs, you'll need to look at the inverter and/or the LCD cable.
Remove the LCD cable, hook up an external monitor, then try to boot.

Thats just it, there is no boot activity as well as no power indication. What I mean is the system is totally unresponsive to the power button as well as no power indication.
All other parts work when tested independently, and the motherboard is supposed to be tested and guaranteed working by the seller.

Send it back for refund + return shipping cost, as in your email to seller.

Just to be clear this is a different board from the first one in the post.
Im reluctant to think this second board is also at fault, but in absence of any other clue it does look like another faulty board, only this one doesnt have any visual damage like the first one.
What a pita. Ive never had this much trounble rebuilding or repairing any laptop in the past.

It's possible one of your parts is shorted and is blowing fuse/s on the boards.

All other parts still work when tested independently, even when stripped to board, cpu, and keyboard it wont boot, and cpu and keyboard function ok. The seller is willing to send another board so ill have to try that, after that itll either work or parts will be returned and binned respecively.

right, progress sort of.
The second seller sent me another motherboard. This one appears to work at last.
Rebuilt the thing and things have moved on to a new [censored] problem.
I can boot the machine, i can enter bios and configure, I can flash bios from disk. I can also begin to boot from cd/dvd but at some point things are coming to a halt. For example :
Boot Hirens Boot CD/DVD - itll boot, present initial menu, but when an option is selected it starts booting and then freezes. This happens for running the dos menu program list, Mini Windows XP and Parted Magic or the Linux rescue disk option etc.
Linux Live CD Distros - Such as Mint Desktop, Presents boot menu, lets you select to boot, but freezes once its initialised and should begin the boot process.
Again, never seen this behaviour before. Ram is ok.
Im thinking faulty CPU as well, CPU originates from first machine at start of thread. Opinions?

Faulty Medium Drive?
Buy a cheap "test CPU" such as the T5270 for less than $5.- (T5270 will NOT work in T60/R60 series!)

Not faulty medium, disks are ones that work and have been used before both on the internal drive which came from the T60P and external USB drive.
Good idea, CPU purchased, will update in a day or two when its tried.

When you put in the new CPU, don't forget to apply fresh thermal paste (like AS-5).
If you have no (or old/dried) paste on it at all at the moment, the CPU overheats, which might explain the (non-)boot-issue!

Thanks. Believe me, Ive fitted vast amounts of hardware, CPU's included.
This little saga owes me a considerable amount of AS5 used already. Good stuff like AS5 is an area you spend money on if you have sense
Actually, now you mention Ill check the fan, it spins up briefly on POST.

Just to come back to this. Whole lot turned out to be problematic junk re original base parts AND s/h mobos.
Got sick of it and pursued and got refunds for everything!
Just now picked up an X100e 3508-CTO off ebay with the L625 CPU!
Back to using a Thinkpad at last, even if it is a glorified Netbook!

I put a Samsung 128gb SSD in my little 'glorified netbook' (X100e) and it runs pretty spiffy. Heat is the issue most mentioned, but for what I use it for (internet/email/youtube) it works very well --
Enjoy your new
'thinkpad'. -- even though many here on the Forum object to it being so named

Yeah I know its not a proper TP
But its a netbook at TP quality and it has my beloved Trackpoint! Really cant stand touchpads.
On a horribly limiting budget right now but Ill be back onto a top model TP again one day, my T60P traveled half the world suffering much abuse before I wore it out.
Just dropped a post in the X1xx forum :
http://67.214.227.38/~thinkpad/forum/vi ... f2#p686419
Will be looking at cooling, AS5 for a start and maybe theres a fan part out there known to be an improvement, just starting the learning curve.

Your X100e is similar to mine -- 3508 CTO -- I have been very happy with mine -- it has 4gb ram, but running 32bit OS, so only sees 3 -- The screen is clear and bright, especially for such a small machine -- the keyboard is solid and easy to type on -- so all in all a great 'thinkpad' regardless of it's place on the Forum Roster
Your X100e post is very interesting -- I will be following the answers -- should be informative...

No probs, chime in if theres something useful, studying the diagrams I cant see an immediate difference between X100e palmrest/bezel and an x120e, its got me wondering if the Fingerprint reader could be added :S
I think mine has W7 x64 but will know when it arrives, still havent warmed to W7 UI over Vista and sometimes I prefer XP on a netbook just for speed and functionality, XP needed for some specialist software.
Ill likely multiboot it with W7, possibly Vista X64, XP and Linux Mint 13 on a 1TB and move to an SSD later, no second ultrabay HDD here unfortunately.
